My dog's penis is white instead of pink. Should I take him to the vet?

It's not a weird question! The dog's penis contains a bone called the os penis. This bone can give the penis a white color if the tissues are pulled tight on it. It's normal, and I wouldn't worry about it unless he's excessively licking at it, straining to urinate, or has blood in his urine :-)

That concerns me that he might be anemic. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by a veterinarian soon. Anemia can cause mucus membranes to look whitish and can cause weakness which can appear as being off balance. They will likely want to check his red blood cell count . Pink salmon color is normal for pets. It is hard to tell based on the photo if there are also white areas there, if they are then that is a sign of potential anemia and therefore Bruno should be seen by your vet and tested. However, if the entire lip/gum area is salmon pink, this is considered to be a normal color and therefore nothing to be alarmed about. When we initially lift up the lip in dogs, some areas that are stretched or pinched can turn white, but then they should go back to normal pink color once the pressure/tugging is alleviated. Anemia is also diagnosed by getting a blood sample from the dog and looking at the red blood cell count. IF a pets gums turn pale white, then that is an indicator that there is anemia, so then it has to be decided what the cause is by evaluating the rest of the bloodwork, along with physical exam findings. Hemolytic anemia will certainly cause a pet to also act ill, such as lethargy, not eating and pale white gums, so that does not fit the description of your pet Bruno. Unfortunately from the picture you have provided it looks like Patches has developed PARAPHIMOSIS. This occurs when the glans penis extrudes from the prepuce and over a period of time the swelling caused by irritation, drying out and contact with environmental factors causes the penis to swell to a size which prevents it returning into the prepuce. Due to the change in color I am concerned about blood blow and the safety of the tissues. I would take Patches to the veterinarian immediately for medical intervention. The vet will make Patches for comfortable by eliciting pain relief. The veterinarian team will then attempt several approaches to safely return the penis to the prepuce. This can include lubrication and careful manipulation. The use of medications to reduce the swelling may also be used. Occasionally a small surgical procedure is required to correct the problem. Pale pink gums are still normal for a dog. Since you say that Bentley is acting normal, eating and drinking, I would not worry. Check his gums once a day every day for the next few days. Should the gums turn pale or white, you will need to call your vet for an appointment.

Based on your description and the picture you have provided I would recommend having a veterinarian examined Bubba so that the most appropriate Diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. When the penis is stuck outside the prepuce comma such as what is going on in the photo of Bubba, it is a condition known as paraphimosis. If the penis becomes discolored and white, this usually indicates that the circulation to the penis has been compromised. When the penis gets stuck outside the prepuce, the prepuce can act as a tourniquet and cut off circulation to the penis itself. Yes, I would be concerned about Guapo in that this redness and discharge can indicate an infection. From the pictures, it look like the discharge could be pus. He could have an infection of the prepuce (the penile sheath), or he could have a UTI or bladder stones causing these symptoms. I would gently wipe the area with warm water on a soft cloth, and have him seen by a vet. The vet can examine him and diagnose what is causing this redness and discharge so he can be treated. Taking him into a vet today would be best if possible. When dogs have infections, they can lick the area because it's uncomfortable to them, but licking it will make it worse. I would put an Ecollar on him if you notice him licking his penis area. You can make one at home or you can buy one at a pet shop.
