Is my dog peeing in her crate and licking it up? Is it harmful?

Hello. It is possible that this is some type of separation anxiety issue. The first thing to rule out is the chance this is a urinary tract infection, so a veterinary exam may be needed to rule out a few things. For the most part, if this is an anxiety problem, once these puppies are well house trained, the behavior will stop. But do mention this to your vet at Teddy's next veterinary visit. All rooms with doors should be closed and she needs to be gated to be kept in your site. Or she needs to be leashed to an adult until this behavior has stopped. The area she is soiling needs to be cleaned with an enzymatic pet cleaner, like Nature's Miracle. She needs to be take out frequently and verbally praised, as well as given treats, when she goes outside. Play with her for 5-10 mins. If she doesn't go outside she is crated or leashed to an adult until you take her out again. This training should go on for 3 months and she can have free reign of the house once there are no accidents for those 3 months. You can have her urine checked for crystals or infection by your Vet and consider having her spayed to see if that helps. I wish you the best!

This is called coprophagia and most puppies will grow out of this behavior over time. There are products you can give that will often curb the stool eating behavior. They don't work in call cases but it is not harmful for you to try. Putting salt on it after the fact will not work. This is a tricky situation and could have several possibilities. Monitor Hannah's drinking and urination volumes closely. If they have increased, consider having her examined and evaluated for diabetes mellitus, as would cause glucose (sugar) to spill into her urine, making it sweet and possibly more palatable for Remington. Otherwise, if Remington has been licking Hannah's urine and other items obsessively, this could be a sign of nausea (although this seems like a stretch). An infection, kidney disease, or an endocrine abnormality could change the appearance or smell of her urine. Many dogs urinate when they are excited and that part is totally normal.
