Why are my dog's paws red, swollen, blistered, and constantly licked?

Hello. This is a very typical presentation of a dog with Atopy, an inhalant or contact skin allergy. Your veterinarian can recommend several different manners in which to address this problem, including medicated shampoos or oral/injectable antiallergy treatments. You can call the vet and ask about using an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs if this does not interfere with the new protein. Prevent him from licking the feet by having him wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Do not walk him and make sure that he is only walking on soft surfaces. You can wash the feet daily with soap and rinse well. Once it is dried, you can apply a dab of organic coconut oil and rub it in well. Make sure he does not lick this as it can cause GI upset. You may also call your veterinarian and ask about a medication like Apoquel or Cytopoint which will help with itching the most. There are multiple reasons why Rocky may be mutilating his hands. The most likely cause is an allergy. Often allergies manifest first with chewing on the feet and legs. Sometimes the clinical signs associated with an exposure can be reduced with medical therapy, which includes the use of a variety of different medications. If we think we can figure out what he may be allergic too, removal of the allergen would be in his best interest. I would also recommend placing an elizabethan collar on Rocky to prevent him from continuing to hurt himself. He won't like it, obviously, but it is in his own best interest and health. Lastly, there are allergy tests that can be performed to rule in / out the most common allergic causes. If allergies are not the cause, skin testing would be required to investigate the issue in more detail. In terms of treating wounds at home, keeping them clean is a great idea. I would use something like dilute chlorhexidine or betadine solution as a cleanser. You can also apply ointments that have antibiotics / steroid creams. If you go this route however, be sure that he is wearing the collar I mentioned earlier to prevent him from licking the salve off his hands. Hope this makes sense.

Red skin can be caused by several things including parasites, allergies to something in the environment, food allergy, contact allergies or endocrine disease. Each one of these problems is detected and addressed differently and I recommend to discuss with your veterinarian which one to start hunting down first. Parasites are often ruled out with an oral medication like Simparica or a skin scrape. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein. Endocrine diseases are detected with blood work. Environmental allergies are a little more difficult to detect but a response to therapy or a blood test can give an indication. Contact allergies are addressed by keeping pets away from things they are allergic to. Once you figure out and address the underlying cause, the redness should not come back. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Also protect the area from trauma by having Luka wear an elizabethan collar if needed. The change of color could be as a result of constant licking. This could be due to an allergy, fleas, an infection or mites. If it's been a while already it is recommended to have it checked by a vet in order to rule out parasites first, then a treatment for allergy or infection can be started.

Poor Bjorn! It sounds like he may have allergies (food allergies, or an allergy to something in the environment), a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or even some type of mange - these are all common causes of excessive itching and redness affecting the paws. Epsom salt baths were a very reasonable thing to try - but since they aren't helping anymore, I'm afraid it's definitely time for a vet visit. Your vet can do some simple skin tests to help determine what is causing the redness and itching, and will prescribe appropriate medication to treat the problem depending on what is found.
