My dog has paw lumps. Could it be a tick burrowed under skin?

This does not look like a tick - it is more likely to be a skin cyst, a skin growth or papilloma or tumor, or possibly a wound caused by a grass seed / foxtail. Your vet will be able to identify what exactly it is and recommend treatment if indicated.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like a skin growth. I don't think it is a tick or any other skin parasite. Ticks feed on dogs for 3-4 days and then fall off. If this lump has been there for a few months it cannot be a tick or any other bug. Skin growths like this are common in older dogs. They are usually benign and not dangerous, but please show it to your vet the next time you take Lily in for an appointment.

While hard to say without seeing her in person, this does not have the appearance of a tick and looks more like a small skin growth. Ticks are usually dark in color, black/brown/maroon and once full of blood can have a pale grey appearance.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. There is no tick in the picture that I can see, or crater from a tick bite. The lump could be a few different things. Most likely is an abscess (pus filled pocket) from a puncture wound and possible "foreign body", something like a grass seed stuck in the foot. The other possible causes are a bug bit of some sort that has caused a local reaction, such as a bee sting or ant bite, or it could be that Dante broke the toe and it is swollen. If he is not putting weight on it, then it means it is quite painful. I would recommend having him into the vet, as it is most likely an abscess, and those can cause bone infections if not treated. Your vet might be able to just treat it by lancing it and providing pain relief and antibiotics, but x-rays or surgery might be required as well. Best of luck with Dante.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Poor Bruno! Bumps under the skin can be caused by a variety of conditions, including abscesses, inflammation from soft tissue injuries, fractures, or bone tumors (unlikely given his young age), among others. It would be best to take Bruno to his vet for an exam and possible diagnostic testing. The vet will be able to feel the lump, assess his gait, and may need to take x-rays or perform cytology under the microscope with fluid/tissue from the lump. That said, if Bruno is walking completely normally, not licking the affected area, and is otherwise eating, drinking, and acting like himself, this type of lesion does not warrant a trip to an emergency vet and can wait a day or two, if needed. It isn't a tick. It appears to be a small growth or cyst. Since Bonnie seems bothered by it, have her examined by your veterinarian. A fine needle aspirate can be done in the clinic to collect samples for pathology. Once results are returned, you can discuss treatment options with your veterinarian. If she can lick or chew it, place an e-collar (cone) on her until she sees the vet.
