My dog had patella surgery. When will her post-op pain get better?

Pet's info: Dog | Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 3 years and 5 months old | 72 lbs

My dog underwent surgery for a luxated patella 4 days ago. The surgeon also performed a tibial transposition. The wound looks clean and dry and she is eating and drinking well. She is putting some weight on the surgery leg too, but she is sore. About how long does it take on average for the worst of the soreness to get better?

The overall recovery for this procedure typically takes 6-8 weeks. Most dogs show significant improvement after the first 2-3 weeks, but their bone is still healing in this time. Continue following Luna's vet's directions regarding the amount of rest or physical therapy exercises that she is to follow to help expedite her recovery. I hope that she's on the mend quickly! :-)

Poor Luna! She's had a pretty significant orthopedic surgery, so I'm not surprised to hear that she is fairly sore. Normally, the worst of the pain and soreness should resolve within 7-10 days after surgery. She should be much more comfortable after that, but will still need to be on very restricted exercise until your vet says it's okay for her to start being more active.

Poor Luna! These surgeries tend to be painful as bone and joints are manipulated. She should be over the worst of the pain after a week. If she seems very unsettled I would contact your vet as she may require stronger painkillers.

Poor Saif! Good mobility and function would normally be expected by 4-6weeks after surgery. I recommend a full check up by the operating vet and possibly recommendations for or referral to physical therapy to try and rebuild strength as long as no focus of pain or breakdown is discovered during his check up

It does have up to a 12 week time frame for complete recovery and most dogs do very well. My dog's luxating patella: Does she need surgery on this leg?

If Stella is having difficulty walking/running, surgery may be indicated. Your vet will be able to grade the luxation by checking to see how far it moves out of the groove. She will then be able to determine whether or not surgery is necessary on this leg. Good luck! I hope Stella is feeling better soon.

What are the stages of dog recovery after broken leg surgery?

The dog should be kept as quiet as possible for 6-12 weeks to ensure that the bone sets and heals properly. This means no running, jumping, or playing, and the dog should be taken out to toilet on a lead only. Once x-rays are done to confirm that the bone has fully healed, the dog will be allowed to exercise and activity levels must be built back up slowly. Physical therapy and hydrotherapy may be done to help the dog regain it's muscle mass and activity levels.

My dog broke her leg. Will she fully recover and how long will it take?

Hello. If you follow all instructions from the surgeon & there are no unforeseen complications, then Sophie should have a complete recovery. She will be uncomfortable for awhile, but she is young & young bones heal very quickly. She will probably need to take things easy for 6-8 weeks, but if the break did not penetrate the skin nor involve any joints or growth plates, she should do great. My dog's luxating patella recurred. How severe is a second surgery?

Not that severe usually to require a euthanasia. Usually this surgery (especially if Peppi is a small breed) is resolutive,but the most delicate part of it, I would say, is the post-operative period, in which initial strict rest has to be followed by gradually increased and proper exercise. I am sure you vet will give detailed explanations about it, based on specific type of surgery they are going to perform. My dog ran after luxating patella surgery. Is his recovery ruined?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Goodness! I think that if he is using the leg like he was BEFORE running off then he is probably fine. He may be more sore tomorrow so we may need to wait. I would be sure you are giving the anti-inflammatories as prescribed by the surgeon. I would also touch base with them tomorrow before the weekend. Be sure on future walks that his collar is tight and he can't slip out again. Good luck!
