My dog's luxating patella recurred. How severe is a second surgery?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 8 years old

How severe is recurreance of a luxating patella (grade 3 both legs)? My dog had the surgery done four years ago, and now she's gonna be operated again next week. I just want to be prepared in case there is a change of her needing to be put down.

Not that severe usually to require a euthanasia.
Usually this surgery (especially if Peppi is a small breed) is resolutive, but the most delicate part of it, I would say, is the post-operative period, in which initial strict rest has to be followed by gradually increased and proper exercise. I am sure you vet will give detailed explanations about it, based on specific type of surgery they are going to perform.
