Can I give my dog with parvo human Zofran, Tylenol, or Pepto Bismol?

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 5 days old | 30 lbs

My dog is a 7 month old border collie mix who weighs 30 lbs and he was found parvo positive last night (3/21/2018) the vet gave him fluids and a nausea shot but we took him home because the vet is out of our budget. We are giving him pedialite through a syringe every half hour for fluids he has puked and it was all liquid but I have read that people have success giving dogs people Zofran and children’s Tylenol and pepto bismol. Is it safe to give my dog that and if so what dosage?

Zofran is used off label for protracted vomiting, though giving pills to a vomiting dog will not go well. All medications have to be prescribed by a doctor who has seen Charlie, it is illegal for us to provide dosing to a dog we haven't examined. . There are other choices that your Vet can provide for you to use at home. Also pepto bismol can be used off label. Giving oral medications to a vomiting dog isn't ideal and it is very likely he will vomit the pepto. Do not use Tylenol in dogs, especially dogs that are dehydrated and have severe GI disease. Vomiting and diarrhea are part of parvo virus. Most puppies survive, about 80-90% with Veterinary guidance. Even at home. I have attached a hand out you can bring to your local vet to help get you the best medications for at home care. I hope this helps and I wish Charlie a speedy recovery!

I would not recommend residing the medication since it is impossible to know how much he may have absorbed. You may want to ask your vet if injectable medications might be an option, or if there are other anti-nausea medications to try. I’m hoping Charlie makes a full recovery!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Zoe! I do not recommend activated charcoal for parvo. I also do not recommend enemas. Enemas will make the diarrhea worse and will further dehydrate Zoe. There is an outpatient protocol for parvo. You'd have to see the Vet to get the supplies but it is much cheaper then hospitalizing and has a decent success rate. Puppies die from parvo secondary to dehydration and sepsis. All you can do at home with out some veterinary involvement is to gently syringe water and liquefied canned food. I would print this protocol out and have Zoe seen today. Get the at home supplies. My puppy shows parvo signs. What can I do if I can't afford a vet?

I know you are doing your best but if you want Allie to have the best chance at survival I suggest you get her to a vet ASAP. I realize you have financial constraints but there are many options these days with low cost veterinary clinics, animal shelters and organizations that give grants. I don't know the dose of Zofran you are using - it is dependent on weight and you did not give her current weight so I'm not sure what to tell you with regards to this. It is best that she eat (if she can hold food down without vomiting) - use anything bland like boiled chicken, scrambled or hard boiled eggs, plain rice or pasta (no spices, butter, etc on anything). You can also syringe some low sodium chicken broth into her. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

I will typically prescribe these puppies an anti-nausea medication to help control any nausea and vomiting. It can help keep food and medications down and make them feel a lot better. Why is my puppy throwing up, has diarrhea, and won't eat?

This could be from parvovirus or intestinal parasites. Since he’s so small and young I recommend a veterinary exam and treatment. He could get dehydrated quickly and that can become life threatening. They will test him for parvovirus and check for intestinal parasite. They will probably give him fluids to prevent dehydration and medication to control the diarrhea. My dog has parvo. What medications or treatments help with recovery?

Poor girl. There is no medication strictly for parvo, but treatment consists of supportive care medication such as antibiotics, anti-nausea medication (Cerenia), fluid therapy (subcutaneous or IV fluids), vitamin supplements, and if needed pain medication. These are all medications that will require a veterinary prescription. They are also all injectable medications in the beginning of treatment since most parvo pets will not tolerate anything given by mouth. My dog has parvovirus. What can I do to help beyond vet care?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Parvovirus is a severe gastroenteritis that affect puppies more often. This is a viral infection so there is no direct treatment for the virus so the treatment per se is directed at treating secondary bacterial infections and mostly helping with the clinical symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea and inappetence. This warrants ideally hospitalization with some cases being able to be managed with outpatient care depending on its severity. I recommend that you continue to follow up with a veterinarian who can institute therapy for Cleo as soon as possible. The quicker this condition gets treated the better the outcome tends to be.
