Dog with parvo: Whining, growling, refusing food. Is this recovery?

Most pets will begin showing signs of recovery after 4-5 days of starting treatment. It sounds like Celie is still not doing as well as expected and that is concerning. I recommend to have her examined again. Have her bloodwork checked to see if she is struggling with low blood protein levels or low platelet numbers. Some pets may need additional colloid fluids or a plasma transfusion. Your veterinarian may also need to do an x-ray to see if there is something else going on like an intestinal blockage. Celie should also be eating a bland diet. I recommend one of the prescription diets like Hill's i/d or Royal Canin gastrointestinal. She may need to be force fed (but only do so with your veterinarian's approval). If you do continue to feed her baby food, make sure there are no onions or garlic in the ingredients. If you cannot get food into her easily, she may need a feeding tube placed or other form of parenternal nutrition. It sounds like you are trying very hard. I can't say if she should be examined tonight or not since I can't examine her and don't know what condition she is in. If she is declining though, she should be examined tonight for sure. Definitely have her checked first thing tomorrow morning if she does not go in tonight. I hope this helps and that Celie starts to recover as expected.

Clinical signs of good appetite, normal activity and mental status and no more vomiting or diarrhoea episodes are usually signs of good recovery. It sounds like Harley is not recovering very well. Extreme weakness is certainly something that requires an immediate veterinary check up at your local veterinarian. It sounds like your puppy is extremely sick, and parvovirus can take a few weeks for a dog to fully recover. It's very concerning he is not drinking as dehydration is the number one cause of death in these animals. He should see a vet again immediately, please take him into one now. Best of luck.

If she's stopped having diarrhea, this is a good sign. I hope that she has some medication on board for nausea and vomiting - if not, your vet should be able to prescribe some for you to give at home. Normally, with parvo, the best sign of recovery is when they have gone 24 hours without any vomiting and are eating on their own - until then, you need to continue treatment with fluids and other supportive care.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Berry! Parvo is a very serious disease and sadly can take much longer than 2 days to resolve. On average it takes 3-7 days and the puppies get worse before they get better. That is a lot of diarrhea. Be sure that you are keeping up with Berry's hydrational needs. Hopefully she is getting IV fluids, IV antibiotics and IV antinausea medications since she isn't holding anything down. Ideally she should be hospitalized if that is possible. These are very positive signs! When a dog survives the first four days of parvo, they have a very good chance of recovery. It may be a few weeks before Sammy is back to himself, but I think based on what you are telling us, those are good signs.

It takes about a week or so for the infection to run its course. Ace may shed virus for weeks afterwards. A good percentage of puppies that survive the first 3 or 4 days of infection usually recover. Without a physical exam, we cannot say if he is recovering or not. Continue to medicate him as directed by your veterinarian. Make sure Ace is eating and drinking. You can offer unflavored PediaLyte or your vet can show you how to administer subcutaneous fluids. Be sure to sanitize or discard bedding, toys, bowls, etc. Keep him isolated from other unvaccinated puppies.
