My puppy has parvo after vaccine. Are twice-daily vet visits needed?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Berry! Parvo is a very serious disease and sadly can take much longer than 2 days to resolve. On average it takes 3-7 days and the puppies get worse before they get better. That is a lot of diarrhea. Be sure that you are keeping up with Berry's hydrational needs. Hopefully she is getting IV fluids, IV antibiotics and IV antinausea medications since she isn't holding anything down. Ideally she should be hospitalized if that is possible. It could be parvo but it could also be other things. you need to take him urgently to the vet for him to get hospitalized and treated, if it is parvo his chances are not good at his age but if it is something else he could survive if he receives the correct treatment.

It really depends on the severity of their disease. If they have a mild case than it might help but if they have severe vomiting and diarrhea than they need to be hospitalized on iv fluids with medications to help control the vomiting, diarrhea, and secondary bacterial infections. Parvo can be a fatal disease if left untreated. Hope your puppies feel better soon.

If your puppy has parvo he is not likely to make it until the 18th with home treatment. Homeopathy has not been shown to help this disease. Parvo is very serious. Please get him to a vet. If you can't afford veterinary care then you should reconsider having a dog. I am sorry to be so harsh but this is the most frustrating part of this profession for veterinary professionals. The puppy should not made to suffer. I understand that people have financial constraints but having a puppy/dog is not an inexpensive endeavor. At this point he may be starting to break with parvo but since he is still eating and drinking he may just have intestinal parasites (worms) causing the bloody diarrhea. General dewormers often don't treat the parasites that cause bloody stools; a prescription product is needed once a fecal test determines what parasites are present. Either way, he needs to be seen by a vet. If he doesn't have parvo then you need to be sure to get him his vaccinations at the appropriate intervals so that he gets protected. You can get low cost vaccines at the local Humane Society or at your local VETCO clinic if there is a Petco near you. Parvovirus treatment consists of aggressive supportive care to control the symptoms and boost your dog’s immune system to help him win the battle against this dangerous disease. Dogs infected with parvovirus need intensive treatment in a veterinary hospital, where they receive antibiotics, drugs to control the vomiting, intravenous fluids, and other supportive therapies. Hello. It does sometimes take time for the gut to heal after a bad bout of Parvo, & 11 days of treatment says to me this was a tough one. Continue to fed Pluto, but you might want to switch to an intestinal diet or one made for sensitive stomachs & skin. I would try feeding pretty small amounts frequently, rather than 2-3 larger meals a day. Even a tablespoon or two every hour or so might be tolerated better. If your Pluto was not under the care of a vet for this, I would also be concerned about concurrent intestinal parasites, so a good deworming may be necessary. It can take 1-2 weeks to recover from parvo, and it is probably encouraging that Frank is not worse at this point. Even when you are careful about potential exposure and when you follow the recommended vaccine protocol sometimes puppies will still become infected with the virus. While I can’t say the exact odds without knowing more details about his lab values and physical exam, some studies have shown a 90% success rate with inpatient treatment in a hospital and the longer he goes without developing life threatening complications the better his prognosis is.
