My dog has a lump. Is dog papilloma contagious? Should he avoid other dogs?

Hi there and thank you for using PetCoach to address your concern. What I am seeing in the photos appears to be what we call a papilloma. These are a result of the canine papilloma virus and it is likely that Georgia picked it up from another dog. It is possible that your other dog could get it but if your other dog is much older, it is less likely to happen. These bumps typically go away on their own but can take months to resolve. Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! Thanks for the picture, it really helps in this case! Those bumps in his mouth are viral papillomas. They are very contagious from dog to dog. They take 1-2 months to incubate so I do not think they are from yesterdays play session. I would warn that dog's owner that their dog may get them. They are benign and will go away on their own. When I see a dog with them on appointment I crush a few of them to make them bleed and place the dog on azithromycin for 10 days. That tends to stimulate the dogs immune system quicker to help fight the viral infection. Blue should not play with other dogs until all the lesions are gone. I am not convinced it is a papilloma, but i can't rule it out either without checking it from a few more closer angles. papillomas resolve without treatment within a few months, there is a treatment available with an antibiotic called zithromx that may make it disappear quicker in some cases.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I agree! The growth has the classic look and location for CPV. It is contagious and dogs get it from playing with other dogs at dog parks, doggie day care or from playing with their normal dog friends. The immune system does clear it eventually though it can take several months sometimes. I usually crush them with my fingers or a hemostat to speed up the process. There is limited evidence that a 10 day course of azithromycin also speeds up regression. He shouldn't play with other dogs until it is completely gone. This is Papillomavirus. This is more common in young dogs and the majority of the time you just have to let the virus work itself out of the system. If they start getting really bad we can try to treat. I wouldn't be too concerned about your older dogs especially if you were just playing with the puppy. Hello, & thank you or using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Warts may or may not disappear on their own, & they can appear anywhere on a dogs body. True warts are the result of a very specific papilloma virus, & fortunately they are totally not contagious. It is always a good idea to have your veterinarian investigate any new or changing lumps, bumps, & nodules Zeus may develop, but it should not impact your boarding plans in the coming weeks. This could be a canine oral papilloma. I would have Nigel seen by a vet to have this diagnosed and treated. You need to keep him away from other dogs for now, as they are contagious. Typically these do not need treatment, and can take 1-5 months to go away on their own.
