My dog has a growth. Is it papilloma? Is it contagious or treatable?

Indeed it looks like oral papilloma, fortunately this is a benign tumor that in most cases resolve without treatment within several months. There is a specific antibiotic called zithromax that is believed to speed up the healing process, you can ask your vet to prescribe it for her.

It is contagious and dogs get it from playing with other dogs at dog parks, doggie day care or from playing with their normal dog friends. The immune system does clear it eventually though it can take several months sometimes. I usually crush them with my fingers or a hemostat to speed up the process. There is limited evidence that a 10 day course of azithromycin also speeds up regression. He shouldn't play with other dogs until it is completely gone. Based on Dolly's age, this is likely what we call a viral papilloma caused by the papilloma virus. These regress on their own (typically within 1-5 months). These are contagious to other dogs so trying to limit exposure to other dogs is definitely something to consider. If a papilloma does not regress on its own or it becomes larger, there are various treatments that can be used such as oral Azithromycin (has been shown to reduce size or resolve papillomas within 10 days in some cases), freezing of the papillomas and surgical removal. For now, I would keep an eye on this and see if it regresses on its own. If at any time it increases in size or does not resolve, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Dolly so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. While odds are good that Monty's lesion is likely a viral papilloma, the only definitive way to determine what's causing the lesion is through removal and biopsy. Viral papillomas are most common in young dogs (like Monty), as well as those that are immunosuppressed. While viral papillomas are contagious between dogs, in young dogs they typically resolve without treatment. That said, some do dramatically worsen or become infected, which is a bit more complicated to manage. Topical treatment won't do any good, particularly for any lesion in the mouth. It would be best to have this lesion evaluated by your vet, who may recommend diagnostic testing to confirm their diagnosis. With that said, it's also not wrong to continue monitoring it to see if more lesions develop or if this one changes at all before pursuing further investigation. Until you know for sure what is causing this lesion, keep Monty away from other dogs at doggy daycares, dog parks, or kennels. I hope that everything goes well!

Papillomas are typically found on the lips, gums, and mouth, and oral papillomas can go away on their own. It typically takes one to five months for them to go away, but some do stay permanently. I would recommend having the lump biopsied just to confirm that it is a papilloma. Once it is confirmed that it is a papilloma, then you can leave it to see if it goes away on it's own, or remove it if it keeps growing bigger or bothers your dog.

It is contagious amongst dogs and they get it from playing with each other. They do resolve on their own. When I see them on my patients I crush them so they bleed as that has been shown to cause the immune system to respond quicker to get rid of it. I also put them on 10 days of azithromycin. If it a Papilloma don't do anything just leave it be. If they get worse the treatment for that is an antibiotic and crushing one or two. This is only done typically if the papillomas are large and interfering with them eating. Than you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
