Why is my 14-month-old cocker spaniel puppy panting so much?

Pet's info: Dog | Cocker Spaniel | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 24.3 lbs

We have adopted a cocker pup (14month old) and are concerned about his panting. He seems to paint a lot compared to our sprocker pup.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Panting per se by itself is not too concerning unless it is causing other respiratory signs like difficulty breathing, coughing or discomfort. If you notice any of those signs, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. Otherwise, his panting is probably normal. Best of luck!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is difficult to recommend further therapy without knowing what is going on first. For this reason, further diagnostics such as thoracic radiographs should be considered first. This may be due to pneumonia, heart disease, bronchitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend considering diagnostics like that to have a better idea of what may be going on. At that point, it would be more accurate to consider therapy with more information on the matter. If she is anxious or nervous then that could be why she pants while awake. If this is a sudden development or she also isn't feeling well then she should be evaluated by a Vet. Is it normal for senior dogs to pant all the time, even when cold?

Hi there, and good question about panting. Panting can be a sign of discomfort, anxiety, and occasionally a sign of an endocrine disorder called Cushing’s syndrome. Along with panting dogs with Cushings are usually drinking a lot of water, urinating frequently, and have an increased appetite. I would encourage you to have them evaluated by your veterinarian soon. They may be showing more signs of discomfort then is realized and they may benefit from medication and or supplements for arthritis. Best of luck and I hope they improve soon. Dog panting fast after being outside but acting normal. What's wrong?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like Lassie may have gotten very hot outside and needs to pant to cool off. Dogs cannot sweat to release heat, so they have to pant to breathe off heat. As long as Lassie can settle down and act normally, eat, drink, etc, he should be OK. I hope this is helpful!

This is probably normal for your puppy but if you are concerned then I would recommend having her examined by your veterinarian. Why is my dog panting heavily when awake but normal when sleeping?

Hello. If Bella's breathing appears normal when she sleeps, then this is not too concerning, but it would not hurt to have her evaluated just to be sure. She is too young for most chronic conditions, but if she is not on any heartworm preventative, this would be a good thing to check on.
