My dog had pancreatitis. Why is he still lethargic and weak?

Make sure you are feeding him a low fat diet. If his appetite is still not great ask your vet for antacids and antinausea medications. Pancreatitis can also be painful. Besides supportive care Chester likely just needs time. I wish you the best of luck and a speedy recovery!

The urination doesn't necessarily alarm me - I expect Winston is probably receiving a lot of fluids via an IV catheter, so he is likely producing a lot of urine and may have just really needed to urinate! However, I do worry that he's still vomiting despite his anti-nausea medication. The vet treating him will definitely be the best resource for input on his overall prognosis, since they have the full picture and can examine him in person. I think you're right to be concerned, but I wouldn't be giving up hope - some serious cases of pancreatitis just need several days of hospitalization before they start to turn around. You're doing the right thing by keeping him hospitalized at this point. Fingers crossed for your little guy! I hope this helps.

Pancreatitis is a serious disease and a dog can die from it. So you need to give her time to recuperate. It will take more than two days for her to become healthy. Make sure she is hydrated and feed her only small amounts of the gastrointestinal food, but offer it often. Eventually she will start eating better. If she still is wobbly and not improved by Monday you should take her back to the vet for a recheck.

Poor guy. An obstruction is something to consider; however uncommon in older dogs. I would be inclined to look at all the lab findings in detail to give you more specific recommendations on what is likely your next best step for Barrington. If he does have pancreatitis then he may need to be hosptilalized with I.V. fluids, antinausea medicaitons antibiotics and pain meds given as an injection to help get him back to healthy status. If his pancreatitis has resolved for a period of time longer than a week or two, it is unlikely that his loss of appetite after playing is related to pancreatitis. However, if he has just recently recovered, there may be some residual pain that may have caused the loss of appetite. I recommend keeping a very close eye on Balto, and having him seen by a vet if he continues to not want to eat or you think he is not acting like himself. You will need to take your dog back to the vet for a recheck. The veterinarian should prescribe pain medicine for your dog. If he has not had an ultrasound exam yet, this may be the time to have one, in order to check out whether he has an abscess or tumor on his pancreas. By now he should not be in pain anymore, especially since his body functions have returned to normal (no vomiting, no diarrhea, and eating and drinking.).

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor guy! Pancreatitis can cause vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia and belly pain. It is a cause of vomiting and diarrhea but it isn't the only cause. Other causes are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, toxin ingestion, IBD, food allergy/intolerance or reaction to eating something outside or a new treat/food/people food. Since he has been low grade vomiting now for 2 days it is best to have him seen soon if it continues. It is encouraging that he is eating. I would be sure you fasted him for 12-24 hours then resume feeding with a very bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Make the meals very small. Only offer small amounts of water. If he is lethargic, won't eat and the vomiting continues even on a low grade scale he should be seen before the weekend. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!
