How much chicken and rice for a dog with pancreatitis, and what ratio?

I am very sorry you are dealing with these issues and differing medical approaches to Zoe's care. The short answer is that pancreatitis is a disease which can be approached in many ways, and none of the advise given is wrong. Only different opinions. I personally prefer hills ID low fat for pancreatitis or boiled boneless chicken breast and steamed rice. Pain relief medication, medication for diarrhoea and also anti-nausea medication are all very helpful medications to treat pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can be a chronic disease and dogs need a change to their diet for a week, months, to even for life. It depends how well Zoe's pancreas heals in the next few weeks. I personally have never had to surgically treat a pancreatitis case, and find medical control the best course of action. The cases I have seen usually present with acute signs which require a short hospital stay to stablize. The dogs then go home with some degree of chronic pancreatitis which may or may not present with flare-ups and return visits to the hospital. I hope this is helpful and that Zoe feels better soon.

However, while you're dealing with this current vomiting issue, I agree that a homemade bland diet is perfectly reasonable. Since Fiona won't eat the rice, you can certainly try other starchy options. Plain potatoes or pasta are perfectly reasonable options, provided that you don't season them or use any butter or oil. Just be sure to mix them with a lean protein source, such as boiled chicken breast. The goal with any bland diet is to keep it as low in fat and simple as possible. If her vomiting continues, certainly have her rechecked by her veterinarian. I hope that she feels better soon!

Hi there. So sorry that Archie is having this issue. In all honesty, it is best to put him on prescription low fat diet as that is exactly what he needs. Pancreatitis is very serious. With each bout of pancreatitis the pancreas sustains more damage and can no longer work properly. Many dogs will end up with diabetes, cancer or severe digestive issues. You are FAR better off with the prescription diet instead of you guessing what to feed him. Talk to your vet about one of the prescription diets like Hill's i/d low fat (it comes in cans and dry food). Boiled chicken and rice is not bad but it is not a balanced diet. You are correct, the fat content should be between 6 and 10%. I would be shocked if you found that low of a fat percentage in any over the counter diet. Again, prescription diet is the way to go. Yes, this is a great food to give a dog with pancreatitis. It is actually my first choice. I would recommend doing small meals every 4-6 hours and see if your dog can keep that down. If you're feeding the canned food do about 3 tablespoons to start and then slowly increase the amount you are giving him until he is recovered. If you're feeding the dry food do it in half cup increments and then slowly increase the amount you are giving him if he is able to keep it down. If she is having symptoms of pancreatitis she most likely needs medications to help relieve these symptoms along with initiating a low fat diet. I would also want to know why she is now developing pancreatitis and at her age, I would strongly recommend an abdominal ultrasound if she is not improving. Prescription diets like Hills low fat I/D might be the best for her long term. If you have not initiated a bland diet, please follow my guide below. It is low in fiber, fat and protein and is high in carbohydrates. Bland diets are generally composed of a single carbohydrate source and a single lean protein source. The most common bland diet is boiled rice and boiled lean chicken breast, without skin and bones. Since bland diets are low in fiber, stool production slows and defecation is less frequent. Bland diets are fed to rest the gastric system and to help promote normal stool formation. Animals that are physically sick should not be fed bland diets as a method of treatment. PRIOR TO FEEDING A BLAND DIET Pets should be fasted for 12 to 24 hours. Young animals should not be fasted for more than 12 hours. Fasting will allow the intestinal system to relax and minimize acid secretions that may irritate and inflame the intestinal lining. During the fast small amounts of water or ice chips may be provided. Never fast a sick animal, it may cause disease progression and death. BASIC BOILED RICE AND CHICKEN BLAND DIET RECIPE CARBOHYDRATE SOURCE: Boiled white rice LEAN PROTEIN SOURCE: Chicken breast, no skin and bones BOILED RICE: 1 part white rice with 3 parts water boiled for 20 – 25 minutes or until the rice is easily crushed. BOILED CHICKEN: De-fat chicken breast and boil in water for 10 – 15 minutes or until the chicken meat is easily pulled apart and cooked all way through. MIXING INSTRUCTIONS: Finely chop the lean protein and mix 2 cups carbohydrate source and ½ cup lean protein source. STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS: Bland diets can be premade and stored in the refrigerator for a maximum of 48 hours. The bland diet can be cooked in a batch and frozen in feeding sized portions to minimize preparation time. Thaw and warm the frozen diet prior to feeding. PERMITTED LEAN PROTEIN SUBSTITUTIONS Pork loin, egg whites, low fat cottage cheese. 7% low fat hamburger, plain low fat yogurt. The bland diet should be fed for 4 -5 days with no treats or other food sources until stools are firm. TRANSITION BACK TO A NORMAL DIET Never transition back to a regular diet rapidly. Transition back to the regular diet over a 1 week period. Start by adding 25% of the regular diet to 75% of the bland diet and feed that combination for 2 days. If stools continue to be firm then continue substituting the regular diet in 25% increments and feeding the combination in 2 day time intervals until the diet is 100% regular diet. Minimize treats for 1 week after moving the diet back to 100% regular diet.

Continue this diet until your one pet is over their pancreatitis episode. Then you can slowly transition them back to a senior diet which is typically lower in calories and higher in protein and carbs. My top brands are Royal Canin, Hill’s Science Diet, Evo or Eukanuba. Hello there, I'm sorry to hear about Dozer's pancreatitis diagnosis. I would caution that the food you prepared sounds too rich. Changes in diet and new additions of food are often a cause of pancreatitis, so any new additions need to be extremely bland. I generally tell people to boil chicken and white rice with no seasonings or additional ingredients whatsoever as an initial bland diet after GI or pancreatic disease. Another option for bland food is a prescription GI diet from your veterinarian. Feed the bland diet for an entire week, or 2-3 days past when Dozer is completely recovered, then slowly taper him back to his normal kibble or diet over a week long period to avoid re-injuring the pancreas. As far as his bad breath, ask your vet about whether he could benefit from a dental cleaning at his recheck appointment. I hope this is helpful!
