My dog has a painless growth under his tooth. Should I worry?

This looks like an epulis, a fairly common benign tumor in dogs. It occurs more often in short faced dog breeds. I recommend getting it checked by your vet to determine what kind of growth it is and what needs to be done about it. Your vet will do an exam, lab work, possibly imaging depending on if you vet believes they need it. Based on these results your vet will be better able to tell you what is going on and the best course of treatment.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This is an epulis - a growth (benign of malignant) on the gum. It can get bigger and starts bothering Baxter but it may stay small and not cause any problems at all. You should monitor the growth for the next 2-3 months. If it is getting bigger or keeps bleeding, that would suggest this is a malignant mass and you will have to think to get it surgically removed. If it stays small, you just need to keep an eye on it. It does not look infected (in fact this kind of growths usually don't get infected in general) so I would wait with azithromycin, Baxter probably does not need it at the moment.

Thanks for attaching a picture. If it feels like normal gum tissue (soft, moveable) it is possibly due to contact from the k9 tooth above it (overgrowth of tissue from irritation). Do you see the same thing on the other side? If it is more firm, painful, red, or grew rapidly that would be more concerning and then it should be evaluated by your family vet. If you elect to monitor certainly have your vet take a look at his next annual visit. If the lesion changes (growth, etc.) certainly have your vet take a look at it sooner. This is a condition called gingival hyperplasia which is just extra gum growth. At your pets next dental cleaning have the vet take a closer look underneath the excess gum. If the gum needs to be shaved away, then the vet can do that at the time of the cleaning to help prevent an accumulation of tartar underneath. Best of luck with your pet moving forward. Take care.

Hello! This looks like gingival hyperplasia and it can be due to inflammation under the gums. When you use a scraper on the tooth you are not getting under the gumline so there is still bacteria under there which is causing inflammation. I would not be overly worried about it at this stage. It is not that harmful but go easy with the scraping and only use that once every month or two. Hello, that looks like gingival hyperplasia. This a common disease in dogs with dental disease. It is typically benign, but may cause some discomfort and bleeding if it ever gets too large. It can also be removed by your veterinarian during's Piper's next dental cleaning. Contact your veterinarian and have them evaluate her for an oral exam and determine if she needs to have her teeth cleaned. Possible causes of the mass are: a benign over growth of gum tissue, an epulis, or cancerous growths. Some epulids are: Fibromatous, ossifying, and acanthomatous. Acanthomatous epuli, in particular, are highly invasive to the bone and are usually located on the front part of the lower jaw. It is sadly impossible to tell from just looking at the mass to say what it could be. I recommend you make an appointment with your Vet. Lucky will have to go under anesthesia, have dental X-rays taken of the area and the mass biopsied or removed, if able. I hope this helps! I wish Lucky the best!
