My dog has a painful skin wound. Can I use Vaseline or other products?

This looks much worse than a simple hot spot. The black part is an area of necrosis (dead skin/tissue) and the rest of the pink area looks fairly deep. This could be an insect bite like from a spider. You can try to apply Neosporin or another type of topical antibiotic ointment/cream few days to a week to see if it gets better. If it doesn't or it gets worse then I suggest you find a way to get Sam to a vet. Do not put hydrogen peroxide on this wound - that would delay healing. Poor Lucky! I'm glad to hear that his vet will be checking him out tomorrow. From the picture, the skin lesion looks most like a hot spot (aka acute moist dermatitis). If you have clippers on hand, you can try to carefully trip the hair over and around this skin lesion to allow for better air flow. You can also gently clean his skin with an antiseptic solution, such as diluted chlorhexidine or diluted betadine, but be sure to rinse and dry thoroughly. If Lucky is scratching at his neck, it would be best to put an e-collar (cone) on until his appointment. The vet may need to prescribe antibiotics, steroids, or topical sprays to help this lesion to heal. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

Of course the best thing to do would be to take Marley to his veterinarian to have the wound examined, to make sure it isn't too deep, and doesn't require sutures or anything else, like antibiotics. However, I understand that isn't an option at the moment A great product to use that's over the counter is Veterycin Plus wound spray or gel. Apply this twice per day, and make sure the wound stays covered where Marley cannot lick at it. If he can reach the wound, place a sock or a t shirt on him so that he can't lick all of the wound medication off once it's applied. If you notice a lot of redness, any swelling, discharge of any kind, a foul odor, or the wound is not starting to heal in 3-5 days, then Marley will need to see a veterinarian. From the excellent picture you have provided it looks like Winstyn may have moist dermatitis, or a "hot spot". Unfortunately, hot spots often require a trip to the vet for clipping of the area, cleaning, and prescription of a healing spray / ointment with antibiotics and a steroid. All of these interventions will help the area heal quickly, and minimise the level of discomfort that Winstyn has to experience. Due to the location of the sore it will particularly difficult to treat at home. In the meantime you can help Winstyn by; Placing a an e-collar to prevent him biting or attracting at the sore and making it worse Attempt to air out the area as much as possible to help it dry out. This is key to healing. Do not attempt any medications at home as they can cause pain and in some cases delay healing. I hope this is a helpful answer and that Winstyn feels better soon. This presentation could be due to a trauma (bite wound) and/ or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be continued at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths (twice daily). I would recommend to shave fur around the wound (clippers are best as if you do it with scissors you may injury him) to be able to clean the area best as possible. After cleaning you can dry it up and apply any cream containing zinc oxide (like sudocream). Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. A definite NO on the hydrogen peroxide! 1. It is best to shave the hair around the affected area if at all possible. If you don't have clippers you can use scissors to shorten the hair - just be careful you don't cut him. If you can't shave or trim the hair don't stress too much about it. 2. These skin lesions are probably not from a bite. It looks like a mild skin infection. The Vetericyn you are using should be all you need.
