My dog has a painful, rapidly growing tumor. Is euthanasia an option?

This is an extremely difficult decision to make. I always try to look at a dog's quality of life to determine if they are still able to do most of the things they've always loved. If they are unable to do half of their favorite things, it is likely that their overall quality of life has declined and euthanasia may be warranted. Since your dog is currently eating, drinking, acting and playing normally, it does not sound as though her time has come. However, since one of her masses ruptured, there is a chance that it could become infected. Ideally, the mass would be surgically removed and biopsied. If surgery is not an option, she may need a course of antibiotics to prevent the onset of infection in the open lesion. If the open mass continues to bleed or begins to cause discomfort, you may need to decide if she should have surgery or euthanasia. If you are beginning to question if the time for euthanasia has arrived, consider discussing this with your vet to get their take since they have examined your dog and can provide some insight into her current quality of life. This looks like a large tumour or abscess which is blocking her back passage and likely causing pain or nerve compression preventing her from walking. She needs urgent veterinary assessment to determine what if anything can be done at this stage but be prepared that euthansia may need to be considered in order to prevent further pain and suffering

Poor Meesha has a very large tumour on her mammary gland. It is essentially a breast tumour, they can be benign or cancerous but in this case I think this one looks like a very nasty tumour. The wounds on it are because it has become ulcerated. I would suggest visiting another vet as this needs to be dealt with promptly as it will be very painful. To fix this Meesha would need the lump along with associated nipples removex. But firstly i would recommend having her lungs and lymph nodes checked for any spread of tumour. It will be a very big operation to put her through so you will need to weigh this up. If you dont decide to have this removed you will need to consider having Meesha put to sleep unfortunately. It would not be fair to her to not do something in this case.

Unfortunately, this is a difficult situation because most tumors that are cancerous and rupture are not going to heal on their own. A double mastectomy will be a very large and could be difficult recovery time for an 11 year old dog. Also, please know that even with surgery, you may not get another 3 years out of her simply because she is already at the top end of her life span. Also, there is always the risk that the cancer has already spread. Another option you may want to talk to your vet about is whether they can just do a palliative "debulking" of the mass that has ruptured. If there is a way to just resect the one tumor that has ruptured, this potentially could give her a good quality of life without doing a full double mastectomy. With the tumor being ruptured, I am afraid you are being forced to either do a debulking surgery, full mastectomy, or euthanasia. Leaving it alone isn't a good option because it won't likely heal on its own and if it isn't already, it will become infected.

This looks like a very large tumor that has become necrotic and infected. When a tumor gets this large it starts to outgrow its blood supply and then portions of it die off and becomes necrotic. This tumor needs to be removed because it will not likely heal at this point. I would recommend taking Luigi to the vet as soon as possible to get him scheduled for surgery. Surgery at this age with such a bad infection does have some risks but I believe at this point the benefits of removing the tumor outweigh the risks of anesthesia. Good luck with your little guy.

Poor Felony! If this lump is leaking pus, then it might be an abscess and not a tumor, as pus is a sign of infection. I think it's worth having Felony and this lump checked out by a vet. Should it be an abscess, then it can be treated with antibiotics. If it does turn out to be a tumor, then I would definitely assess her quality of life. I work for a home euthanasia service, so I face these questions all the time with my clients. I always recommend making a list of five things your dogs loves to do, and when they no longer do at least two of them, their quality of life has declined to the point where euthanasia should be considered. My professional opinion is to have Felony seen by a vet to see if the lump is an abscess. An abscess doesn't mean she has to be put down, and you could have more time with her, so it's definitely worth checking out. I hope this helps!

Without examining Nels, I can't say how her quality of life may be affected by this hanging mass, the cause of the mass, or any possible treatments. The best way to determine the underlying cause of Nels' mass is to take her to the vet for an exam and fine needle aspirate (FNA). The FNA is performed by sticking a needle into the mass to draw out a few cells and then examine them microscopically. This procedure is generally quick and relatively painless. From there, you should have more information as to whether the lesion is benign or malignant, and your vet will be able to provide more information as to whether or not surgery and antibiotics are indicated. If Nels is otherwise eating, drinking, and acting normally, I would recommend getting more information before making a life-ending decision.
