My dog has painful, growing head bumps; antibiotics aren't working.

You should give the antibiotics a couple days to work, i am hoping that by Sunday you will start seeing some improvement. if by Monday it is not getting better take him back to the vet, it might need to be opened surgically in order to drain the fluids that are accumulating on that spot.

There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. If you can shave the fur away and clean the area twice daily with warm and mild soap then apply a topical antibacterial cream twice daily it may help. If the area gets worse or isn't starting to improve with a week you should have her seen by a Vet. Most exams and antibiotics shouldn't be that expensive. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Hello, I am sorry to hear about Sunny. The fluid filled pocket you describe sounds very similar to an abscess. Dogs can have abscesses in this location secondary to dental disease, stick chewing, or other problems. If severe enough the abscess can cause a fever as you describe. If Sunny is not doing better with the medications provided I would have her rechecked by your veterinarian. They may have to drain the abscess to help get rid of the infection. It is possible that Sunny feels uncomfortable due to the abscess which is why her limb is stiff. However, it is possible that this is unrelated and could be caused by a muscle strain or infection. If this does not improve or gets worse in spite of the medications I would have her rechecked by your veterinarian so that the can examine the area and her affected limb. Hope this helps, good luck!

Based on previous diagnostics I would proceed with a biopsy ( a larger sample) as well as a culture and sensitivity. If there is growth on the sample, I would proceed with a longer duration of antibiotics as indicated. It may be worthwhile in the interim to start a low dose of steroids to reduce any inflammatory/allergic response, but I would only start after collecting a good biopsy and culture. This could be an infection, but it is also possible that it is a type of neoplasia like lymphoma or mast cell and a larger sample is likely needed to determine.

It may be infected and he might need an antibiotic. The best thing would be to have your vet look at it again and prescribe an antibiotic. It could also just be removed so it doesn't swell and bother him again.
