My puppy still shows pain after bowel surgery on meds, is it normal?

Given that Stanley was recently neutered and had abdominal surgery to find the undescended testicle, he may be a little painful still and that's causing him to cry out in pain when pooping. It could be as well that if he is on pain medication, it is making him a little constipated, and you can try adding a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) in with his food to see if that helps. If this doesn't help, and he's still crying when pooping after 24-48 hours, then I would take him into the vet for an exam.

Pain after neutering does occur, and your vet can give you pain medication for him if they haven't already. After neutering, some dogs can be tired and want to rest a little more than usual. Keep an eye on the stitches where the surgery was done, and make sure they don't become red and swollen. Do not let your dog lick the stitches. Your dog likely didn't poop until this morning because they weren't allowed any food for 12 hours before the surgery, so they wouldn't have anything to poop out. Butt scooting can also indicate parasites, so if his worming isn't up to date, I would get worming tablets from your vet. If the incision site becomes red, swollen, and warm to the touch, I would contact your vet right away for an appointment. It is also okay to give your vet a call if you are concerned about your dog being in pain, and see what options they can give you for pain relief.

Hello, thank you for your question. General anesthesia can decrease overall GI motility. Additionally Peluche was likely fasted before this procedure. I would not be too concerned about the lack of defecation. If he is otherwise eating, drinking, and acting ok it is fine to continue to monitor him. Things should return to normal very soon. I don't think it should be related to the surgery this many days out but, of course, it could be. I suggest you take him back to the vet for an exam. I do not know what could be going on without examining him myself.

Typically with dehiscence, they will be lethargic, not eating, have a fever (over 103) and just not themselves. While it takes time to recover from a surgery like this I would recommend having your veterinarian just examine Patton. I rather be safe then sorry, especially if you are concerned with his behavior at home. It may be normal for him post surgery but it may also be that he is very stoic and there is more going on. As a veterinarian I rather my clients bring the animals in to get looked at and it be nothing then wait it out and it be serious. Poor Bayley. She just need a bit of time to settle down, follow your vet instruction reading meds and she will be better soon. I would wait till this afternoon and if she continues to be unsettled, not eating and lethargic I would have her re-checked. I understand being concerning. I'm wondering if Hank is being given any pain medications. Certain pain medications can have side effects such as GI bleeding, and that could cause the color of his poop. If he's not on pain medication, he may be quite painful leading to the lethargy. I'd have him seen by a vet now to be safe.
