Shih Tzu ate too much. Is he just tired or could it be bloat?

It may be that Teddy just ate too much. Keep a close eye on it, and if he starts trying to throw up but can't, has excessive drooling, starts pacing, or is anxious, have him seen by a vet immediately.

All these symptoms point to a possible heart problem. I would be very concerned here and would highly recommend taking Rocco in to your local vet right away for a proper examination. If the abdomen is indeed bloated and it isn't due to gas, then the vet will likely want to run some radiographs (x-rays) of your pet to determine what is making the abdomen enlarged and how to best treat it. Poor guy, he is very young to have heart problems, so I sure hope this is just gas coupled with something like an upper respiratory infection. Both very treatable offenses.

Small breed dogs don't get bloat. Bloat is a large breed deep chested dog disease, so you have nothing to worry about there. Also symptoms of bloat include vomiting (food and water), severe pain and agony in a lateral position. Niko likely has some indigestion and has from eating too much food in such a short amount time. Allow his stomach to settle by skipping his next meal and then you can feed him an easily digestible meal such as plain boiled chicken and rice or cottage cheese for a few days until he gets back to his normal self. I'd keep an eye on Milo for now and try a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he's still nauseous on the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Bloat at this age can be caused by many medical reason, for example heart failure, liver failure or cancer. you will need to take Gizmo to the vet ASAP in order to have some tests done (blood test and xray), this should revile the cause of the bloat.

You can monitor him at home for the next 2-3 hours as long as he is not extremely bloated. Eating too much kibbles is more dangerous that eating wet food but I assume that at his age he ate some wet food only ? Some dogs are very thirsty after eating too much food but please do not offer him a lot of water as this may cause further stomach distension. So, your puppy may be sleepy and lethargic for a the next couple of hours then he should get better. However, if he looks in pain and the abdomen is hard and very bloated you should contact your local vets to get help.

I'd without food for tonight, and keep a close eye on him. If you see pacing, anxiety, restlessness, trying to vomit but can't, and excessive drooling, take him into an ER vet right away.
