My dog has a large open wound on her ribs, no vet. What can I do?

Hello, sorry to hear about Babe. I agree with you it doesn't look like it is bleeding and I could potentially be seeing something in the hole. The area appears to be quite deep and my biggest concern would be that it is going into her abdomen. This wound should be checked and managed by your veterinarian tonight to reduce the risk of an infection, especially if the wound is recent. If it is going into her abdomen, then she may need to have further diagnostics to exclude a foreign object within her abdomen. This does indeed look painful and ugly. There is no way to tell what caused this, however it is big enough and looks concerning enough to need to be seen by a vet. The vet will have these wounds cleaned after clipping all the hair around them, then disinfect them and probably apply some antibiotic ointment. Do not let Symphony lick the area as that may aggravate the condition. If she is very much in pain or if the wounds are bleeding, you should take her to a Pet ER tonight, otherwise you can probably wait until tomorrow to take her to a vet.

The best thing to do right now is keep it covered with a clean towel. It can be secured with masking tape. Don't try to clean it since that could cause bleeding to start if it dislodges a clot. Gypsy needs to see the vet in the morning so it can be evaluated and she can get started on antibiotics and appropriate pain medications. Depending on what the vet finds, it may be able to heal on its own (called second intention healing) or it may need surgery to remove dead tissue or cover bones if they are exposed.

Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. This is a pretty significant wound on Nova. The top layer of her skin is missing and the black tissue (likely muscle) is dying (necrotic). I would recommend that Nova get checked out by a vet ASAP for proper treatment. She likely needs to be sedated to have the dead tissue removed so it will heal without infection.
