My dog has an open sore on her tail. Should I put Neosporin on it?

I would not advise the use of neosporin or any other topical ointment as it is a bit deep and those are not indicated in internal tissue. I would recommend a plastic cone to go around Kali's head to prevent her from licking / chewing at the sore. She will likely need an ointment more effective than neosporin. I would recommend buying a plastic cone at the pet store and using an ointment such as Zymox topica ointment. If the sore worsens I would then schedule an examination with your veterinarian so that the most appropriate treatment recommendations can be made. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. Hello, sorry to hear about Dutch. I would be concerned about this being some form of trauma or even an ulcerated nodule over his head. You could monitor that area for bleeding, pain, discharge, further hair loss, and the area becoming bigger. Neosporin should help keep the area clean, however, after 3 days it may slow down healing so you may need to discontinue it in about that time. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Do not cover the area this can create an environment that can make the infection worse. I would recommend an ecollar until you can get him into your regular veterinarian. Without seeing the lesions it is hard to say if it is something that should be seen sooner then later. Lesions like this could be for many things including fleas, trauma or bacterial infection. You must protect the area from licking and Allura should wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. You can wash the area and let it air dry. Otherwise no action is generally needed. If she continues itching, have her examined by the veterinarian to look for underlying causes. I hope this helps.
