Is one flea on my dog normal? Should I vacuum or check houseplants?

Typically, a topical treatment works by killing the flea when it bites the dog and sucks it's blood. Because it was live on your dog, it hadn't had a chance yet to bite him and diet. Even if there are more, they will die as soon as they bite your dog thanks to your stringent flea treatments. It's not something I would worry about since he's treated and you found no more on him, but if you wanted to be safe, you can give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas in 30 minutes, and it's safe to give him now. I really think it was one he picked up outside. I hope this helps!

Hello, Luna may have had a single exposure as the fleas will die from the flea medication. Since she is protected, you should continue to monitor her coat for any additional fleas. Its likely that you have fleas in your yard and home, so in addition, you should spray your yard and home with flea insecticide to reduce the flea load in your environment. One flea is possible but not likely. The majority of a flea population lives off of the pet and in the surrounding environment. To be safe and to prevent an infestation, use a topical or oral flea preventative for at least the next three consecutive months, preferably year round. Your veterinarian can dispense CapStar, which will kill any adult fleas on Jake within 30 minutes of administration, if necessary. Vacuum everywhere and dispose of the bag or empty the canister outdoors immediately after. Wash all bedding in hot water. Use an area treatment, such as Knockout ES, to prevent infestation.

If you haven't seen any other signs of fleas, then yes I would say you are in the clear. If your dog does pick up another flea in the year, then yes it will die when the flea bites your dog due to the monthly topical treatment :-)

I think you are in the clear if you haven't found any further fleas and he's on a monthly preventative. If he had more and you used a flea comb, you likely would have found additional evidence of fleas. Because you didn't, I would not worry :-)

If the dog was treated prior to coming to you house then the fleas are likely dying. It somewhat depends on what treatment the dog was given as to how much of a problem these fleas may be. I would make sure to keep your dog current on flea medication. Vacuum areas where your dad's dog has been and empty the canister outside as this may pick up an flea eggs or larvae that fell off of that dog. More than likely your house will be fine without drastic treatments. Be sure all pets have flea medication applied or given.

You certainly are quite worried about this, and that makes me concerned for you. You have mentioned your dog is on a monthly flea preventative, and you did say in a previous post that your dog was treated last week. If you cannot handle daily actives because of your fear and worry, I think it would be best if you speak to a mental health professional about this to get some help. Your dog is well protected with the monthly flea treatment program, and you haven't found anymore more fleas in the home. Please believe the experts when we say a monthly prevention program is enough. I do recommend getting some help for your OCD as it's severely affecting your life at this point in time. I'm sorry you are so worried, but truly you have no need to be this concerned. Trust me when I say we would have told you if you have a reason to worry :-)
