Can I give my dog olanzapine for occasional separation anxiety?

While hydroxyzine is an antihistamine commonly used for allergies and might cause mild sedation in dogs, it is unlikely to resolve Hunter’s separation anxiety. I recommend trying positive reinforcement, providing distractions, or even using calming supplements for dogs or a product known as a “thundershirt” prior to resorting to medications. You should consult with your vet regarding any medications you may want to give to Hunter to confirm that there will be no interactions with anything he is currently taking and that the dose is appropriate for his size.

I am sorry to hear about Max. Lexapro is not a drug we normally use in dogs so its safety and efficacy hasn't been evaluated and I would not recommend giving this drug. The drug also requires several weeks of use before effects are truly seen so it would not help you now. There are, however, some prescription medications your vet can recommend and prescribe to help Max to provide both short term and long term relief. There are a number of other medications that can be tried for Montana, such as Paxil, Zoloft, Clomicalm, diazepam, and lorazepam among others, but only your vet can decide if one of these drugs are appropriate and safe to use in him. You can try using a DAP which is a pheromone diffuser that can help dogs with anxiety. You can try using a Sentry calming collar, which releases pheromones when it comes in contact with his skin. I would discuss with Montana's vet if any other drugs are appropriate for use in him.

Sorry to hear that Bo is having this issue. Thank you for rescuing him :) Separation anxiety is a huge issue in dogs and it is not an easy fix even with medications. We cannot recommend you give any medications without you talking to your vet first, especially a drug like alprazolam that is a controlled substance. What I can tell you though is that 0.25mg will not touch a dog that size. Dogs take a MUCH higher dose than humans as they metabolize the drug differently. What you really need to do is try to correct the behavior instead of trying to mask it. I suggest you consult a dog trainer in your area that will come to your home and assess the situation. They can help you try and correct the behavior. Sometimes medications are indicated to be used in conjunction with training and then you can try to wean them off the drugs eventually. You will need to work with your vet and trainer about using medications in conjunction with behavioral modification. Hello. Much depends on what is the underlying cause of your pets anxiety. Noise phobias can sometimes respond to gradual conditioning to that noise. Training & training tools & toys can sometimes help with separation anxiety. Often, we turn to pharmaceuticals & supplements. I always recommend OTC products like Zylkene or Composure. These are natural supplements that contain ingredients that are not harsh or dangerous. CBD may help with anxiety, but you need to be sure the company you use has scientifically formulated their products to be sound. Prescription medications are often used, as needed or for help with behavior modification. Sileo, Trazodone, acepromazine & anti-anxiety medications like Prozac have all been utilized, but you will need to work with your veterinarian on these.
