My dog hasn't pooped in 2 days after being sick. Is she constipated?

Thanks for using Pet Coach! Sometimes after not eating and having severe diarrhea, it can take time for a solid stool to reach the "end of the pipes" so to speak. I would say that 4 days is on the long end of what I expect so if she does not defecate in the next 12 hours, I would recommend seeing your vet to make sure she is not constipated (which could happen with serious dehydration). If your dog has not eaten in three days, this is something you should be very concerned about and should seek veterinary attention immediately. If your dog, however, is eating completely normal but has not defecated in three days, this is nothing to be worried about yet. As long as your dog continues to eat normally, drink normally, Urinating normally, and plays, it sometimes can take up to a week to have a bowel movement. It's not normal that Tinkerbell hasn't pooped in two days, and she could be constipated. Constipation can be caused by anal sac impaction, intestinal parasites, a foreign body, too little fiber in the diet, lack of exercise, or even tumors in the GI tract. I recommend giving her a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) mixed in with her food to see if that helps. If she is still constipated in 24-48 hours, she will need to see a vet as she will likely need a laxative or an enema. Your vet can diagnose the cause of the constipation as well.

Any surgery, especially abdominal surgery, can cause an ileus, or slowing of gut movement. If not watched, it can lead to constipation, but I would not worry yet. If she is eating, you can give her about 1 teaspoon of canned pumpkin ( not pie filling ) a couple of times a day. The fiber will act like a natural laxative. If she has not had a BM by Tuesday evening, call your veterinarian. They may recommend a stronger laxative. Take care.

You can feed him cooked some sweet potatoes for the next couple days. That should help. If not, feel free to post again but we would need to know what medications you have available in your country for human constipation so we can tell you if you can give it and what the dose would be.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding ZJ. If he went a period of time without eating real consistently, this will slow down his digestion. It can take some time for a bowel movement to form. Additionally, if he has taken narcotic pain medications, this can cause mild constipation. I would alert his veterinarian with this update. However, if he is eating normally and acting like himself, then I suspect he will have a bowel movement soon. If he is acting ill and straining to defecate though, this is worrisome. In the meantime, offer plenty of water to keep him hydrated and help to soften the stool. I hope this information helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bonita. It is unlikely that she is constipated unless she is straining to defecate and only producing small firm stool. She will likely defecate soon, but it can take awhile after having diarrhea. The diarrhea and vomiting emptied the gastrointestinal tract. After she is eating normally for a period of time, then she will begin having regular bowel movements. This can take a few days in some cases though. So I would not give her milk of magnesia at this point. I hope this information helps!
