My senior dog hasn't pooped since diarrhea/vomiting. Constipated?

Hello. You can offer Maggie 2 tablespoons of canned pumpkin ( not pie filling ) twice a day. This is a very safe laxative. If she does not produce a stool in another 24-36 hours, or she seems bloated, starts vomiting or stops eating, please have her evaluated by your veterinarian. Typically after dogs have diarrhea they will not defecate for a few days. If he is straining to go or he still has diarrhea I would recommend a veterinarian. It is never a bad idea to take Moko in to have the veterinarian perform a rectal and make sure there is no cause for concern but it is fine to wait another day. Your veterinarian can check his stool sample for intestinal parasites, dispense a prescription bland diet and even medication to help with his diarrhea. I am very sorry to hear that Lelani has been so unwell. It sounds as though she is on a great treatment Plan. It can be normal for some constipation to follow a gastrointestinal upset. I would continue to monitor her at home for a few hours. If by the end of the day she still hasn't had a bowel movement, or if she seems in pain or lethargic I Would take her back into the veterinarian. The concern is for a foegein body obstruction. But because she seems happy and active it is less likely.

I'm sorry to hear that Sunny has been sick! It's actually quite common for dogs to go a few days without a bowel movement when they have had diarrhea - this is because it takes time for the intestinal tract to "fill up" again with normal stool, once the diarrhea resolves. So it's likely that this is a good sign :) As long as Sunny is acting normal and not straining to defecate, I wouldn't worry - she will have a bowel movement when she is ready, probably sometime in the next 24-48 hours. If you didn't give the medications two hours apart, this is okay - some vets do recommend giving oral meds like this at different times to avoid any issues with absorption, but it sounds like Sunny did just fine regardless. This would not cause constipation or any other issues. I would not recommend stopping either of these medications without talking to your veterinarian first, as it's generally important to finish out the entire course of prescribed meds in order to make sure that the problem is completely resolved. If you're concerned, you could certainly call your vet today and ask about continuing the medications vs. stopping them - but they should not be causing Sunny to be constipated, so based on your description I don't see any reason to take her off of them.

After a period of profuse diarrhea, the whole gastrointestinal tract is generally pretty empty. It can take several days for normal stool to form and pass normally. I wouldn’t worry about the little pellets - Lilly’s intestines are still just trying to get back to normal. The pellets mean that her overall stool quality is improving. Constipation rarely occurs right after diarrhea. As long as she isn’t straining while trying to poop, and is otherwise eating, drinking, and acting normally, it sounds as though things are improving. If she hasn’t pooped by Thursday, it’s worth having her rechecked by your vet. I try to give dogs up to 5 days to form normal stool after profuse diarrhea. It's hard to know if this is constipation or anxiety. I do recommend to transition her diet. Most vets do not recommend grain free diets unless a pets has a known grain allergy due to the potential link with heart disease. Some pets will also need a diet higher in fiber to keep them regular. The diet I recommend is Royal Canin. Most pets on this diet have good stool quality. Thanks for using Pet Coach! Sometimes after not eating and having severe diarrhea, it can take time for a solid stool to reach the "end of the pipes" so to speak. I would say that 4 days is on the long end of what I expect so if she does not defecate in the next 12 hours, I would recommend seeing your vet to make sure she is not constipated (which could happen with serious dehydration).
