My dog listens at home but not on walks. How can I fix this?

It's normal for dogs to have trouble paying attention and following commands outside vs. in the house, because outdoors is a much more distracting environment. I would recommend carrying some very tasty treats with you when you take Mike for a walk to help keep his attention, and reward him when he does what you ask.

Hi there. It sounds like Bea is having some trouble with her focus. While much of that is just being young and full of energy, I feel you would benefit from clicker training (a treat and reward system) as well as a well organized puppy class. Puppy classes are often offered at your local pet smart as well as through several trainers as help puppies to develop a sense of ability to socialize without being distracted enough by their surrounds that they ignore their owner. To many puppies-they see this as an exciting time to meet new friends and play with their owners. For us it is a wonderful area to help the puppies feel safe and bond with us over respect and learn boundaries. She is likely just reacting to stimuli (things she doesn't often get to see) and doesn't realize she's being "bad" as well as being full of energy. This will take a lot of patience and treats on your part when she performs or listens to you. She will get there, it is just a learning process.

Puppies love treats so you just need to make sure you associate these commands with positive things such as treats to distract him. This Behavior may be due to the fact that she is more comfortable in her own environment. Being at a dog park, it is sort of an unfamiliar environment and is not where she normally is so she may feel more comfortable and that she can get away with more in your backyard. Also, there may be more distractions in the backyard that she is familiar with. I would recommend keeping her on a leash in the backyard and teaching her commands in the backyard when I'm the leash. Once she respond to those command on the leash reward her with treats to reinforce the positive behavior. I am glad to hear that she is listing to you when outside of the backyard versus the other way around. I would also suggest training her with a dog clicker or whistle to see if this helps more than your own voice. I hope this helps! Ideally, a dog should work for your praise rather than a treat or toy. The fact that she walks away when you try a recall tells me that you are working her off-lead before she has become reliable on-lead. And when you go after her, it turns into a game of "catch me if you can" for her.If possible, enroll her in a basic obedience class. Do all of her training with her on the leash until she performs well every time. Keep practice sessions short--about ten minutes--but always end on a positive note. At 13, it is likely that Meika is starting to lose some of her hearing which might be playing a role in what you are describing. I would recommend repeating some obedience training with her like you did when she was younger using treats for reward to get her excited about doing training again. I would also start training her with hand signals if you didn't previously do that to help her if she is starting to lose her hearing. Finally, I would recommend having your veterinarian examine her to make sure she doesn't have arthritis which is contributing to her not wanting to walk as much or follow commands.
