My dog won't eat and is losing weight, but seems happy. What's wrong?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 14 days old

Hi,my dog has not been wanting to eat much for the past 6 weeks .It started after an 8 hour long road trip where he didn't feel himself in someone else's home. But he slightly started not being as interested in his food even some time before that, however he always finished it. It is summer so he may not have appetite? His stool seems normal. No vomiting. He's losing weight.I tried adding chicken, tuna to his royal canine, but it doesn't really help. He seems disinterested. He still seems very happy

I am sorry to hear that Jengo isn’t feeling well. Being a young dog the possible causes that come to mind would be things like intestinal parasites, intestinal foreign objects, congenital organ disease such as the kidneys, diaphragmatic hernia, or even a liver shunt. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. An x-ray, fecal exam, and blood work may be recommended to help determine the diagnosis and the best treatment plan.
Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
