My dog is lethargic, not eating, and losing weight. What should I do?

A week of inappetance, lethargy, and now panting is concerning for many different conditions, some fatal without treatment. Concerns would be a foreign object stuck in his gut, severe gastritis, heart disease, infection/sepsis, etc. Lethargy and inappetance (not eating) are vague clinical signs that can be associated with many disease conditions. Your vet will do an exam, and likely run some bloodwork, and might have to take some x-rays. Best of luck with Alfie, I hope he feels better soon!

Loss of appetite and lethargy can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Dexter evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Hello. You might want to look into some payment options like https://www.carecredit.com or https://www.scratchpay.com to see if they can assist you. You really need to have Sinba evaluated to see if there is some inflammatory disease like exocrine pancreatic insufficiency ( epi ), an infection, either viral or parasitic, or even a foreign body causing his symptoms. Once you have an idea what might be causing these extreme symptoms, hopefully with treatment you can get him turned around. Thanks for using PetCoach.

It sounds like he needs immediate care if he is not eating, he is lethargic and may have a fever. This sounds like a serious condition that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. I am sorry to hear that Jengo isn’t feeling well. Being a young dog the possible causes that come to mind would be things like intestinal parasites, intestinal foreign objects, congenital organ disease such as the kidneys, diaphragmatic hernia, or even a liver shunt. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. An x-ray, fecal exam, and blood work may be recommended to help determine the diagnosis and the best treatment plan. I can't fully understand your post but I think you are saying that Max is lethargic and isn't eating. That he is holding down water. Is he vomiting too? From your pictures his gums do look a little less pink then they should. If he is anemic (low red blood cells) then that can be serious. Causes could be blood loss from a tumor inside his belly, infectious causes like tick borne diseases, immune conditions or other types of cancer. There are many causes for lethargy and not eating: blockage, cancer, kidney or liver failure, viral diseases, etc. I would have him seen by your Vet for an exam. I wish you and Max the very best!
