Why is my dog not eating, vomiting, and hasn't pooped in days?

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 14 lbs

Hi my dog hasn’t eaten his dog food in a week but has been eating human food here and there. We have him rice today but he threw it up. He also hasn’t pooped in a few days. Any idea what this could be?

Since this has been ongoing I recommend getting him seen by your vet to find out what is causing his loss of appetite. It may be that he's holding out for people food but the vomiting is concerning. Your vet will do an exam, lab work, possibly x-rays and based on the results your vet will be better able to tell you what is going on and how best to treat it.

There are a number of illnesses that could cause decreased appetite with weight loss. Some common possibilities would include chronic liver or kidney disease, a partial intestinal obstruction due to a foreign body or tumor, a severe intestinal parasite load, or even some type of cancer. I would recommend taking Pohana to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to - he/she can do blood work and x-rays to help determine the problem and see what can be done to treat it.

Your dog needs to be seen by your vet as soon as possible. Any abrupt change in behavior or attitude is a sign he's not feeling well, and without an exam from a vet there's no real way to know what's going on and therefore, how to treat it. My dog won't eat and hasn't pooped in days. What should I do?

It certainly is concerning that Loki’s appetite has been decreased for so long, and if he is also losing weight there is probably a medical reason for why he doesn’t want to eat. When a dog isn’t eating much it also doesn’t produce as much stool, and I would guess this might be why Loki has not defecated in three days. Of course there are many other possibilities as well, and I would recommend seeing a veterinarian for a physical exam to start. They might recommend checking blood work as a first step.

Why is my dog throwing up, not eating, and can't pee or poop?

Chronic vomiting, has multiple causes but may cause an electrolyte imbalance which could account for the symptoms you are seeing. If he is drinking more water than usual, he should be seen by your vet for an exam and bloodwork to rule out kidney disease, diabetes or other GI issues. When a pet is vomiting, withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. If he won't eat, serve the food warm or mix in a teaspoon of baby food to stimulate the appetite. If the vomiting stops, transition slowly to the regular diet. If not or if the appetite does not return, then you will need to see your veterinarian.

My dog hasn't eaten or pooped in 3 days. Should I be worried?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! His current anorexia is likely why he has not been defecating. Anorexia for 3 days is concerning given the possible diseases that could be causing it such as pancreatitis, foreign body ingestion, inflammatory diseases, infectious diseases and even cancer, especially in an older dog. I highly recommend that you have Batista evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment of this. Diagnostic tests are likely to include bloodwork and abdominal radiographs though other tests may be recommended based on the physical examination findings. You may try to offer Batista a palatable diet including things like boiled chicken, ground beef and white rice to entice his appetite though it is extremely important to figure out what is causing it to be able to help him. Keep water available at all times to prevent dehydration. Good luck with your boy! Will keep my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!

My dog hasn't eaten for days, is vomiting, and eating leaves. Why?

You need to take Hank into a vet right away. It's quite serious he hasn't eating for three days and is vomiting. He could have a severe GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, or could have a foreign body. He needs veterinary care immediately to diagnose what is causing these symptoms so he can be treated. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. If he hasn't been eating in two days it is highly abnormal, i would not recommend waiting, he needs to see a vet as soon as possible, it may be an infection or some other condition that requires to be treated with medications.

My dog hasn't pooped in 5 days, is vomiting, and I can't afford a vet.

It sounds as Pumkin is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet Urgently, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong. If money is an issue please contact a dog charity in your area of living, they can help with costs of treatment in many cases. Many vets also have payment plans, and there is also a credit company that will land you money toward vet bills ( https://www.carecredit.com/vetmed/) .
