Why isn't my dog eating after shots and before mammary tumor surgery?

Tashi's loss of appetite can be related to her cancer, similarly to humans who have cancer, animals can lose their appetite and not feel well. However, it can be caused by something else such as a toxin, intestinal parasites, or a number of underlying medical conditions. I recommend keeping a close eye on Tashi, and having her seen by a vet prior to her appointment if she does not eat for a full 24 hours, has loss of energy, or vomits/has diarrhea. Possible causes: infected uterus since she is not spayed, cancer, foreign body (ate something that is stuck in her stomach or intestines), or intestinal parasites. I would need more information about what tests your Vet ran: blood work, stool sample or X-rays of her belly? If those things have not been done then I would recheck with your Vet as soon as possible. An infected uterus and a foreign body are emergency surgeries and can be life saving if done early. If she has cancer the best thing would be to discuss humane euthanasia since Sasha is suffering. I am very sorry and I with you and Sasha the best.

If she has been like this for more than 24 hours, then it would be best to take her to the vet. She may be reacting negatively to her medication and need treatment to get better. If she is currently on medication, then it's best to stop it at this time until you are able to speak with your veterinarian, or have her seen by a veterinarian. I would recommend that you have Shanova Maye checked out by a vet. Dogs can get mammary (or breast) cancer and it can look lumpy or cystic. Some types of cancer are metastatic and can make the dog very ill. There are lots of other causes for her poor appetite, including stress, dietary intolerance or indiscretion, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection, IBD, pancreatitis, among others. Your vet will do a thorough physical exam and may recommend diagnostics such as bloodwork and x-rays so they can get a complete picture of would could be ailing Shanova.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lily! Removing a few lumps isn't the same as removing the eyes. She could be more painful than you think or is reacting to the pain medication or the antibiotic. I would start to worry 3 days after surgery. Give her time. It's barely been 24 hours after this major surgery. And even if we though she was 100% blind before she may have seen some light and now her world is dark. I have seen dogs we thought were blind have both eyes removed and they were depressed for a while. I wish you and Lily the best!

Aw I am so sorry to hear this about her. Her illness is likely what is causing the decrease in appetite. The steroid usually helps to decrease the inflammation and increase the appetite. A few things I would talk to your vet about is whether a daily probiotic and a long term appetite stimulant would help her. I would also talk to your vet about starting her on weekly Vitamin B12 injections. Most dogs with GI cancer or IBD have low Vitamin B12. Your vet should be able to give her one injection a week for 4-6 weeks then decrease the injections to once a month if she is doing well. Vitamin B12 is also a natural appetite stimulant. I would also talk to them about whether an oral steroid daily would be better than the occasional steroid injection. I obviously do not know what type of steroid injection they are giving. Some steroid injections stay in the system for 6-8 weeks where others only stay in the system for 48 hours. I would also consider putting her on a hypoallergenic diet if she would be willing to eat it. If she prefers human food, you may consider making her own diet at home. This lump on Siu q could be a benign tumor, a cyst, an abscess, or a lipoma. It would be rare for such a young dog to have a malignant tumor, but it is possible. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. I would take Siu q into the vet today or tomorrow to have this lump examined and diagnosed so it can be treated as needed. As for the lack of appetite and lethargy, those are very general signs of illness in dogs, and it could be caused by systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury. Because Siu q is going to see the vet for this lump, I would have a health check done on her as well to diagnose the cause of the lethargy and lack of appetite.
