My dog won't eat, is lethargic, has diarrhea, and is unresponsive.

Pet's info: Dog | West Highland White Terrier | Male | neutered | 10 years and 3 months old

My dog won't eat but will drink water. He's very slow on his feet and slow to respond. He's quite a grumpy dog and will bite and growl if you lift him but I lifted him no problem and he didn't respond at all!! I'm really concerned I've no idea what's wrong. He also had diarraohea.

Poor Charlie sounds like he is ill! Anorexia is a very general sign of illness and it can be caused by dental problems, systemic illness, kidney disease, liver disease, heart failure, infection, inflammation, injury, or even cancer. When a dog feels poorly, there are often behavioral changes and that may be why he doesn't care when you lift him. I would have him seen by a vet as soon as possible. The vet can diagnose what is causing his symptoms so he can be treated. I hope this helps!

    Thank you for submitting your question regarding Charlie. He could have over exerted himself on his walk. Does he seem painful at all? Has he limped? If it was very hot, that can affect a dog's appetite as well. Coming from the humane society though, upper respiratory tract infections are very coming. Have you heard him cough? Other dogs will sneeze and have eye or nose discharge. I would monitor him closely for any of these signs. If he is not feeling better and refuses food, he will need to see an emergency veterinarian. Poor Charlie! There are several things that can cause him to be lethargic and not eat like kidney or liver disease, an infection, a tumor/cancer, general GI upset, parasites, and much more. Since he has an extensive medical history and he isn't eating well and lethargic, I would strongly recommend to have your vet take a look at him asap. Your vet will be able to do a fecal, blood work and even x-rays if needed. They will be able to recommend the best treatment plan for him to help him feel better! I hope this helps!

It sounds like your dog is sick. The drooling can be due to nausea, and the lethargy, vomiting, anorexia, and diarrhea could be due to a severe GI illness, eating something rotten, pancreatitis, or a foreign body. I would take your dog into a vet right away for an exam, he sounds quite ill with all these symptoms, and he needs to be medically treated ASAP.

Poor Chispa! She does sound like she is feeling ill. Anorexia and lethargy are very general signs of illness, and could be caused by infection, injury, systemic illness, or inflammation. I would recommend taking her into the vet in the morning for an exam. If she develops other signs overnight, such as vomiting, I would take her into a vet immediately.

Given his age and symptoms, he will need to see a vet as son as possible, it seems like he has nausea and is in severe pain, this is probably due to an internal condition and it will require some tests such as an Xray or ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong with Charlie.

Hi there. While it is not abnormal for Charlie to be lethargic and behave differently when everyone leaves-this is a bit much. I would recommend taking him in to your veterinarian in case something else is going on. Pancreatitis, intoxication, and a few other diseases can start with this presentation. Shivering in dogs is often a pain response (can also be nervousness, cold, etc). If these behaviors continue I recommend taking him in as soon as you can to try to prevent it from getting worse. Sasher does sound pretty sick if she hasn't eaten for three days, and unfortunately anorexia is a general sign of many different illnesses. Things that could be causing this include dental disease, liver failure, kidney failure, heart disease, systemic illness, injury, or cancer to name some. The sooner you get her into the vet, the better. I'd take her now. Best of luck.

Poor Broeski doesn't sound like he feels well! His anorexia could be due to things such as dental disease, systemic illness, infection, or injury. The shaking could be due to pain or fever. If he's still acting this way in the morning, I'd take him into the vet to get checked out. I hope this helps!
