My dog isn't eating, acting weird after vet visit, high creatinine?

If your vet isn't worried about Kodiak, I would not be worried either. Slightly elevated creatinine can also be due to dehydration, so it could be that he may be dehydrated caused this elevation. A slight elevation isn't a cause for worry when other values are normal and there aren't any other concerning physical signs. To get him to drink more water, I'd consider adding canned food to his diet. It has a higher moisture content, and you can mix it in with his dry food. You would have to cut back on his dry food to a little to account for adding in the wet food, so ask his vet for the correct ratio. The other option is to add a bit of low sodium chicken broth to his dry dog food to get extra moisture into his diet. I hope this helps.

Based on your post of Lucy's bloodwork she has both elevated liver and kidney values which could mean she has another underlying condition altogether that is affecting both her organs such as leptospirosis, Cushings disease (hyperadrenocorticism), or any number of tick diseases. Therefore she needs additional testing to determine what the primary disease process is. She needs to most likely be hospitalized, placed on fluids to flush her system and pain medication if indicated. while the vet runs the necessary tests to determine the underlying problem here so that we know how to best treat her. Like I said before these lab values cannot be differentiated unless additional testing is done. I would likely first start with finding the specific gravity of her urine to rule out kidney failure first. Just because elevated kidney enzymes are present it does not always automatically mean that the pet is in kidney failure. Also it is very unlikely that both the kidneys and liver enzymes will be elevated without having another underlying disease process causing this. I'm sorry to hear that Caramel is not feeling well. The paperwork showing "female" instead of male is a typo somewhere. Nothing that was run in those tests determine's the dog's sex, so I suspect that was entered wrong at the lab. His kidney values are a bit high, but they aren't crazy high. If a urinalysis was not performed, talk to your vet about running a urinalysis as well, as this will help determine whether those values being high may be in part due to whether or not he is dehydrated (typically the "USG" or "urine specific gravity" is what we are looking for to help interpret this). You may also want to talk to your vet about an abdominal ultrasound (sonogram of the belly); having images of the kidneys and bladder as well as the rest of the abdominal organs (liver, pancreas, GI tract, spleen, adrenal glands) can be helpful in terms of what the most likely cause of his clinical signs are. Another consideration since he is "hardly able to get up" would be a painful condition that's making him not want to move; ask your vet if he seems painful anywhere. To summarize, here is what I recommend you do. Take him to your vet and ask about a urinalysis. Ask your vet if he seems painful anywhere (belly, back, neck, joints). BUN and Creatinine typically have an intimate relationship on blood work, meaning that when one is elevated, the other is typically elevated as well. There are relatively few conditions that would have an elevated Creatinine without the BUN being elevated. These are typically due to muscle breakdown which would release more creatinine in the blood. Exercise could produce such an increase. Pathologic muscle breakdown would produce sharp levels but such conditions would likely be accompanied by symptoms such as weakness and lethargy in particular. The value of 6.1 is high, which could indicate any of the above or this could potentially be a lab error. I would consider having the blood retested to check and make sure this value is correct. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Linda. I would stop feeding any treats and keep her strictly on the kidney diet. She should have her blood pressure checked and a urinalysis done to look for extra protein in the urine. Both are common with kidney disease. There are medications that she can take that will help both conditions if necessary. This will slow further progression of her disease. Depending on her results, I will add a potassium supplement (if her potassium is low) or a phosphate binder (if her phosphorus is high). These things will help her to feel good for as long as possible. Always ensure she drinks plenty of water. I hope this information helps!

Levels of creatinine and BUN that are this high indicate a severe kidney disease also called acute renal failure. This can be caused by toxin ingestion e.g. ethylene glycol, infectious disease such as Leptosporosis, loss of blood flow to the kidneys, urine outflow blockage or even neoplasia (less likely given young age). Occasionally renal failure can also occur secondary to GI diseases such as pancreatitis - which would explain the diarrhea. If Simba is not in the hospital right now, he needs to be seen by a veterinarian for immediate medical care. Potassium levels this high could cause his heart to stop. Simba needs to have this potassium level treated immediately and needs to be on aggressive fluid therapy for the kidney disease. Make sure your veterinarian has ruled out all of the possible differentials discussed above. I would also recommend a consult with a boarded internal medicine specialist. If her SDMA is normal and her creatinine is wnl then her kidneys are likely normal. BUN can be increased from dehydration, a stomach ulcer, a high protein diet or a very muscular physique. You would normally see vomiting or black stool if she had a bleeding ulcer so I doubt this is the cause of the high BUN. To ensure her kidneys are okay, I would talk to your vet about checking a urinalysis on her. Your vet will assess her protein levels and specific gravity to see how her kidneys are functioning. If the protein levels look high on the dipstick and there isn't an infection, I would talk to your vet about doing a urinary protein creatinine ratio. If it is elevated it could be challenging the kidneys and can cause future problems. There is a medicine to help called benazepril. You can also switch her to a prescription kidney diet just because they have a much lower protein content than the food over the counter. Some dogs just naturally have a higher BUN and as long as it isn't progressively getting worse, I would just continue to monitor it. I hope this helps!
