I'm sorry to hear that! Unfortunately, without more information, it's hard to give any specific suggestions or advice. Not eating could be due to almost anything, from a mild upset stomach (or could even be normal for a picky eater), to a more serious GI problem like pancreatitis, or a severe systemic illness like liver or kidney failure. Without knowing more about what's going on with John, the best thing I can recommend would be to have him seen by a vet for an exam - he/she can also do diagnostic testing such as blood work and x-rays if needed to help determine why he isn't eating.

    Poor John! Not eating can be a very general sign of illness, and could be due to dental problem, infection, systemic illness, or injury. If he hasn't been eating for less than 24-48 hours, I would try to tempt him to eat by soaking his dry food with gently warmed low sodium beef or chicken broth, or gently warmed wet food. You can also try feeing him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. If he refuses to eat with these methods, and if he hasn't been eating for three days, then I would take him into the vet for an exam.

    When a dog does not eat he usually does not feel well. As this is a very unspecific sign of illness, I suggest you offer him his favorite food, and if he does not eat for more than 2 days, take him to a veterinarian for an exam. This could be caused by nausea, gastrointestinal problems, kidney disease, liver disease and a multitude of other illnesses.

Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Cleo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Sometimes when our pets suddenly change a behavior, we are (naturally) inclined to look at other evernts to see if there might be a connection. While dogs do mourn the loss of people they are very close to, this typically happens when dogs and their people have lived together for many years, so I’m not sure this is a realistic cause of his sudden loss of appetite. There are just so many things that can cause a normal young dog to stop eating - parasites, a blockage in the intestines, infectious diseases like parvo or leptospirosis- it’s hard to say what is going on, but your instincts to go to Oakley’s vet are 100% correct. I encourage you to get him in and get him checked out - exam and blood work at minimum - to see what’s going on.

My dog won't eat, is throwing up, and has diarrhea. Is it serious?
Based on the information provided, I'm not clear as to how long the loss of appetite and other symptoms have been going on, but I'm assuming more than 24 hours. It sounds like your big man normally has a very healthy appetite. The symptoms do seem pretty vague, but if they are becoming more frequent, it is definitely time to see your veterinarian. Lots of things could cause Cash to stop eating; everything from a virus, to a blockage from something he ate, or kidney or liver disease, and more. Your veterinarian will likely want to start checking some bloodwork and maybe getting abdominal xrays. The previous episode of diarrhea may or may not be related, but I think it is time to look into this further. In response to your question "could this be something serious", that is harder to answer. In short, yes it could, but I hope it isn't. Only with a full exam and some testing will your veterinarian be able to answer that fully. I hope your Johnny Cash is on the mend soon.

Your dog needs to be seen by your vet as soon as possible. Any abrupt change in behavior or attitude is a sign he's not feeling well, and without an exam from a vet there's no real way to know what's going on and therefore, how to treat it. He could have eaten something he shouldn't have that's causing an obstruction or irritation, he could have been exposed to something toxic that you weren't aware of, there's a number of possibilities. Your vet will do an exam, lab work, possibly x-rays if indicated, and based on these results, your vet will be better able to understand what is going on with your dog and how best to treat him.

Bee is experiencing a very general symptom of disease, this symptom could fit almost any internal condition, maybe he is suffering from nausea due to a gastrointestinal disease and maybe he is in pain, from the symptom described it's very hard to know. i would recommend taking him to the vet as soon as possible in order to get him checked, if he doesn't show any other obvious symptoms during the examination, a blood test and possibly an ultrasound will be needed in order to try and find out what is wrong with him.

A dog may stop eating for a wide variety of reasons, some of which are due to medical conditions and others that may be more behavioral. Medical problems such as gastrointestinal viruses, intestinal obstructions, parasites, or kidney disease, among other conditions, can lead to this problem. Other dogs may become disinterested in their food and may prefer a different flavor of food, or the taste of the food may have changed due to the container in which it is stored. If your dog is still active and playful, you can try to tempt them to eat with a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days before gradually transitioning back to either their original diet or to a new food. (Any time you change diets, be sure to do so gradually by mixing the old and new foods together over 5-7 days.) If this is unsuccessful or if your dog is lethargic, vomiting, or having diarrhea, a visit to the veterinarian is in order. The veterinarian will be able to perform a physical exam as well as any necessary diagnostic tests to try to get to the bottom of this issue so that proper treatment can be started.

Why won't my senior dog with pancreatitis eat his special diet?
I'm sorry Shadow isn't feeling well. At 14 I would be concerned he has stopped eating. However, dogs can go several days without eating and it's ok. He does need to continue drinking however. If he's not drinking too, I recommend taking him to a vet for an exam, blood work and X-rays. They may need to give him fluids and they can also give him medications to make him eat. The biggest hurdle is to find why he's not eating. Good luck and kisses to Shadow!
