Dog not eating much after food change, but seems fine. Help!

Sometimes when our pets suddenly change a behavior, we are (naturally) inclined to look at other evernts to see if there might be a connection. While dogs do mourn the loss of people they are very close to, this typically happens when dogs and their people have lived together for many years, so I’m not sure this is a realistic cause of his sudden loss of appetite. There are just so many things that can cause a normal young dog to stop eating - parasites, a blockage in the intestines, infectious diseases like parvo or leptospirosis- it’s hard to say what is going on, but your instincts to go to Oakley’s vet are 100% correct. I encourage you to get him in and get him checked out - exam and blood work at minimum - to see what’s going on.

However, it is worrisome that he is not eating. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian to determine why he has experienced this abrupt change in appetite. It can be difficult going from one place to another since Kane most likely doesn't understand. If he isn't eating I would recommend a physical to make sure there is nothing going on medically with him. If he is fine then I would talk to your veterinarian about how he is behaving. This happens occasionally due to a few reasons including boredom with the same diet, loss of satisfaction from the food, oral discomfort, jaw pain, among others. Your veterinarian can perform a physical exam and then advise some diet recommendations or advise some testing to evaluate his health (fecal exam, blood tests, x-rays, etc). Unless you can find an appropriate diet they he likes I would let your vet take a look at him and go from there. Good luck with Bufford.

I recommend to call the previous owner and ask if he has always been finicky or if this is out of character. Also make sure to feed the same diet he was eating at his original home. Since Lucius can't talk and tell you why this is happening, it's best to play it safe. I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian. You are right to be concerned - appetite is an important way that our pets can show us how they're feeling, and when a dog doesn't eat, it is often a sign of sickness. However, sometimes dogs will eat less when they're stressed, such as when their owners travel and they're staying in a new environment. I recommend mixing a small amount of cooked rice and lowfat chicken breast in with Poopetta's food - if she cannot be enticed to eat that, then I recommend having her seen by a vet to make sure there isn't something more serious going on.
