My dog's nose is turning pink and spreading. What should I do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is probably from him rubbing his nose against a cage or something like that. I would suggest checking on that possibility. Otherwise, if that is not possible and this continues have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment to check on a possible infection. Best of luck!

As long as he is acting normally - eating/drinking/urinating/defecating normally - I would not be worried. I recommend monitoring the area over the next week or so, and if it changes in appearance, i.e. becomes larger or irritated, I would have Benji evaluated by a veterinarian. I hope this is helpful!

I agree with your vet. I would not be too concerned at this time. It is not uncommon for dogs to lose pigment to the nasal area without it being a significant problem. It could be from an injury and if it is, the nasal planum does not always go back to normal color - it may stay that way. If it gets worse, meaning the discolored area gets larger or if it starts to get crusty, then I would recommend some testing like a biopsy of the tissue. I hope this helps. There are a number of reasons for loss of pigmentation on a dog's nose, most of them just cosmetic, which is what yours appears to be. As long as the skin remains healthy and normally textured, I would just to bring it up to your vet the next time your dog is in for his annual visit or take a picture and send it to them now to see what they have to say about it. As long as this area is not painful and is not bothering your dog, you can monitor her at home for the weekend. However, if the area is sore or is bothering your dog, you should take her to your local vets tomorrow.

It’s possible that this is a localized skin infection with some deeper swelling and involvement. That would be called a pyoderma and these lesions can be superficial or even a little deeper. This could be a primary skin problem or secondary to trauma, abrasion, allergies, exposure to ectoparasites (fleas/ticks), or even a tumor. I would advise anything lasting more than a few days to a week and not getting better, would need an exam by your veterinarian to assess. Hopefully this resolves over the next few days but if it’s not getting smaller/better, I would advise Tiger seeing your veterinarian. Thank you and good luck!
