My dog has a nose patch and hair loss on his leg. Is it normal?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am not sure I can fully see the area you are concerned about. If it is the area near the nose that has less hair or the 2 white/pink spots. I do not think anything about the picture is life threatening unless I am missing your concerns. Hair loss on the muzzle can be from trauma or repeated digging/rubbing with his nose, ring worm (fungal) or demodex (non-contagious mite). If the area doesn't improve or it spreads then I would have your Vet check him out. If he is rubbing his nose to bury things then prevent him from doing so. I wouldn't recommend putting anything topical on the nose because he will likely just lick it off. I hope this helps and please repost with clarification if needed.

From the photos it appears that the lesion is affecting both the mucosa of his nose and also his skin. This could be some sort of deep bacterial infection or perhaps something like ringworm (which humans can get). It is also very concerning however for an autoimmune condition. I recommend to have a Bosco visit his veterinarian with in the next day for an exam. The doctor may try treatment or testing for an infection. The doctor may also recommend a biopsy. From the photos here it looks like these are patches of hair loss. We can have hair loss at points of pressure if a dog likes to lay on hard surfaces, but we also worry about things like ringworm (a fungal infection), skin mites, and bacterial infection causing patches of hair loss. I would recommend bringing your dog in to the vet to examine the area. They may recommend a fungal culture if ringworm is suspected or a cytology of the skin to check for bacteria or a skin scrape to check for mites.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. It is very difficult to say what this lesion could be. It almost looks like he scraped it causing a superficial wound. I suggest you try using this topical wound spray on the lesion 3-4 times per day for about a week to 10 days. If there is no improvement after that time then I think you should take Marco to your vet for an exam. I don't like the look of this. With it so round and well demarcated I would guess it's from a spider or insect bite. You can clean this with a warm cloth and a mild shampoo or soap. Rinse it well and when it's dry apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. I would have this examined in the next few days as it could be a fungal infection from rooting in the ground also. If there is any question as to the cause your veterinarian can do a skin scraping of it and get a diagnosis after looking at the cells under the microscope. Based on the picture you have provided, it appears that this could be bacterial or a skin parasite causing the lesion. The skin may need to be cultured and if a skin scraping has not been performed, I would certainly recommend having this done to make sure this is not due to a skin mite such as demodex. Hello. I would watch this for a bit & see if it progresses. Is it possible that Mr. Pickles received a vaccination in this area in the last few months? Sometime a localized vasculitis can occur & it can look like this. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that the hair will grow back. You can rub a little OTC hydrocortisone cream into the area for the next 7-10 days, but if it does not seem to bother him, just keep an eye on things.
