My dog has a rough, bumpy bald spot on his leg. Should I worry?

Hello. All I can see is a small area of dermatitis on the leg. It can have many causes, but you can treat this with an over the counter skin antiseptic called Hibiclens. Gently scrub the skin twice a day & dab dry ( do not rinse ). Do this for about 2-3 weeks & the lesion should clear up. But since I cannot make any kind of actual diagnosis, if the skin becomes more irritated or the area does not seem to be healing, please consider seeing your veterinarian. This looks like a hot spot on Lucky's leg. This usually occurs from excessive licking of the area and an infection that is present in the skin. Lucky will need antibiotics to help clear up the infection. He may also need some allergy medication to prevent the area from coming back. The bumps behind the ears are probably due to allergies as well. I would recommend a trip to your vet to get some antibiotics for the leg and possibly some allergy medication if indicated. A mild allergy, mites, bacterial infection or even ringworm can cause hair loss with that appearance. It looks like a pretty small area with mild inflammation to me so I'm not overly concerned. You could use a gentle oatmeal based dog shampoo to clean the area. You can also use an e-collar if it seems like Nova wants to lick at the area. I don't think avoiding grass will be helpful. If the area does not start to regrow hair or the redness gets worse I would see your veterinarian. Your veterinarian can obtain skin samples to see if an infection is present. This is likely to resolve on its own as long as you prevent any further self-trauma (preventing her from licking at it for example). You can get an e-collar from your local pet store or simply just keep a very close eye on her to prevent further self-trauma. In most cases of mild infections, if this is done at home, they can resolve as long as you keep that area clean. If no improvement of worsening is noted in the next 3-4 days, then have her examined by your veterinarian. However, there is a good chance she can do well at home. She is adorable! Yes, it is possible that this is a spot of reaction where the needle has gone in and the vaccine has been injected. If that is the case it should not progress any further, but it is possible that it will remain the same (bald, black spot).

That hairless area could be related to a bacterial infection, a fungal infection (which could be contagious to humans) or a healing wound. I can’t tell if it is raised or not. If the area is raised, then I think you should get it checked out as certain skin cancers can look like this. If the area is nice and smooth, then I think you could monitor it and see what happens over the next two weeks. If it doesn’t go away or if it gets worse, then take him in to be seen. Of course you can always have him examined as you will likely get answers faster that way. At home make sure the area is protected from scratching or licking.
