My dog has a bump on her nose. Is it a spider bite or something else?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. What you are seeing is likely what we call a papilloma. This is a type of skin growth caused by the papilloma virus. The good news is that these are benign and will typically resolve on their own. If it gets much bigger or there are new ones thst begin to pop up, I would have a veterinarian examine Lexi so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. There are medications such as azithromycim, that have been shown to reduce the size of papilloma. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. It sounds like Charlie needs to be examined by the veterinarian. Those spots and the lesions on the muzzle could be several things including ringworm (which humans can get) allergies to something in the environment, food allergy or endocrine disease. Each one of these problems is detected and addressed differently and I recommend to discuss with your veterinarian which one to start hunting down first. Ringworm is diagnosed at the vet's office by examined the hairs. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein. Endocrine diseases are detected with blood work. Environmental allergies are a little more difficult to detect but a response to therapy or a blood test can give an indication. Once you figure out and address the underlying cause, the lesions should not come back. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Also protect the area from trauma by having Charlie wear an elizabethan collar at all times if he is trying to lick or scratch the lesions. A lesion like that could be several things including an ingrown hair, allergies, skin mites, bacterial infection or a skin tumor/mass. Spider bites can get pretty large with a dark center and a discharge. They can take longer to heal than other insect bites. There is never a way to be certain what causes it. If there is a drainage then clean it with soap and water and keep neosporin in it until you can get to the vet. If there is no puncture and it is a bump under the skin then I would have that checked to make sure it is not a growth

I am sorry to hear about Asher! This could have been a small bug bite or wound. If it is not painful you can try washing the area with a mild soap or antiseptic such as hibiclens (available at most drug stores) and apply a topical antibiotic such as Neosporin to the area twice daily. If the area increases in size, becomes painful or starts having a discharge, or more spots arise then a veterinary exam would be recommended.

A couple of things come to mind as possibilities. This could be an acute hypersensitivity reaction to something - bug bite/sting, perhaps - or possibility a severe bacterial infection called furunculosis. There are also some immune-mediated/auto-immune diseases that attack the top of the nose. See your vet about this. An appropriate treatment plan might be to start antibiotics and if no improvement after 2 weeks consider a biopsy to obtain a definitive diagnosis.

I don't like the look of this. With it so round and well demarcated I would guess it's from a spider or insect bite. You can clean this with a warm cloth and a mild shampoo or soap. Rinse it well and when it's dry apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. I would have this examined in the next few days as it could be a fungal infection from rooting in the ground also. If there is any question as to the cause your veterinarian can do a skin scraping of it and get a diagnosis after looking at the cells under the microscope.
