How can I help my dog with many newborn puppies? Should I use formula?

If you haven't yet, transition her to a quality puppy food. Feed her this diet until she weans the litter then transition slowly back to an adult maintenance diet. Provide plenty of fresh water as well. If necessary, you can supplement the pups with a puppy milk replacer such as Esbilac or Pet Lac. Either may be purchased from your veterinarian or the local Petco.

Mom should have enough milk for all five puppies and you should not need to hand feed them formula. If you think they are not getting enough milk, have it verified by your vet. In that case you can supplement with puppy formula while they are still feeding from mom.

As long as the puppies seem warm & content, & you see the mother dog cleaning up after the puppies, all will be well. How lovely of you to take in this dog and her puppies! If they cry all the time, then they may not be getting the milk they need to survive and I would start caring for them yourself. Female dogs should not be bred over the age of 7, and 13 is way too old to be having puppies. Spaying her is the only way to prevent it from happening again. Congrats on the puppies! Usually the bitch will do all of the work. Just supervise and make sure she is allowing all of them to nurse and she isn't sitting on any of them. If she isn't nursing them then you will need to buy some dog formula (KMR) and bottle/syringe feed them every 3 hours and use warm water and a cloth to gently rub their genitals to help stimulate them to pee and poop (this mimicks the bitch licking them).
