New pet food causing problems? Should I reintroduce old food mix?

Hi there! You can transition her like you would normally with other diets. The key is going to be to do it slowly which is always true for dogs. What I typically recommend is to do it over 4 days as follows. Feed 25% of new diet and 75% of the old diet on day 1. Feed 50% of each on day 2. Feed 75% of new diet and 25% of the old diet on day 3. You can start feeding the new diet entirely assuming that the transition has been well-tolerated and has not resulted in any gastrointestinal signs such as diarrhea, nausea (manifests as drooling, lip smacking and/or decreased appetite), vomiting or anorexia. Her stool in the 2nd and 3rd pictures still look a little soft, so I would give it another couple of days on the 25%/75% mixture before going to 50/50. If when you do make that switch to 50/50 and she starts having diarrhea again, then I would say that this food isn't agreeing with her and keep her on her old food instead. I say that because if you've tried the 50/50 mixture, got diarrhea, went back a step for a bit before returning to 50/50 and still get the same result, then it's not a food that agrees with Kitty. Dexter could have diarrhea for many reasons. It is possible that it is related to the new food. To see if this is the cause, over about a weeks time, transition him back to his old food. If the diarrhea goes away then you know that was the cause. If it continues, I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian and checked for common things like parasites and bacteria overgrowth. Just like people pets can have diarrhea for many reasons. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Rather than using a 50/50 mixture for a diet transition, I would instead ideally recommend starting 75/25 old/new food for 2 days, 50/50 for another 2-3 days, then 25/75 old/new food for another 2 days. Chloe is more likely to experience gastrointestinal upset without the more gradual transition. That said, it is possible that she could be perfectly fine with a more consistent 50/50 transition over 7 days. If she does not normally have a sensitive GI tract, you can try a 50/50 mix for 7 days, but if she does develop signs of a GI upset (vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite), a more gradual transition will be necessary. Yes, you should have transitioned her slowly over a few days from the rice and chicken to the new food. So start all over again: Fast Meisha again for 12 hours, then feed bland food such as boiled rice with boiled boneless white chicken meat in small quantities over several feeds a day,. Do this for a day, then start replacing small quantities of rice with her Blackhawk food over the next two days until she is at the normal quantity of her regular food. If the diarrhea does not go away by the end of the third day, or your Meisha is lethargic and dehydrated,you will need to take her to a veterinarian for an exam.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Usually we recommend a switch to a new food slowly to avoid the signs that you are seeing now (diarrhea, upset stomach, etc.). If you are already seeing these signs then there is no point on a slow switch. I would suggest switching over to the new food now. Be prepared for more diarrhea/upset stomach however, and if you can go buy some boneless skinless chicken breasts and rice, and boil BOTH of these, and feed this for a few days once you get it, it might help. Then mix in the new food slowly. In the mean-time though, just switch to the new food. Best of luck with Aspen!

Hi, I'm Dr. Johnson. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Peaches! Diarrhea can be from a sudden food change and intolerance to the new food. If you changed the food abruptly then he just may have not had time to adjust. I would recommend changing him back to the original food until his stool is normal then if you still want to try the new food, change it slowly. If the diarrhea returns he can not tolerate the new food. Other causes of diarrhea in young kittens are parasites, viruses and bacterial infections. If the diarrhea persists, he starts vomiting or stops eating he should be seen by your Veterinarian! Good luck!
