Why does my dog have a lump and swelling after neuter? Is it a hernia?

It is possible that a hernia might have formed where the testicle was previously removed. Or this could be a mass unrelated to the testicle or the castration. Either way, you need to have Steven examined by your veterinarian to determine exactly what is going on here. Your veterinarian can make treatment recommendations once she figures out what is causing the lump.

It’s normal to have a bit of scrotal swelling in the first few days after the neuter, but 9 days later it would be unusual for this to appear, unless Willie has been more active than he should. If those lumps are small then I recommend keeping him quiet (no off leash play, and short leashes walks) for a few days and monitoring. If the lumps are large, noticeably growing, painful, draining, or bruised then I recommend rechecking with your vet to make sure he doesn’t need to start oral antibiotics or anti inflammatory medication. Unfortunately i cannot see the picture of it, which would be ideal to give you a specific answer, but I can guess that is a small herniation of muscle/subcutaneous tissue coming through surgical incision (which i guess is healed now) or the result of a chronic inflammation (possibly due to licking the area). In both cases a check up would be required to confirm clinical suspicons and treat appropriately. Poor guy...that does look uncomfortable. It may be infected, but I would suspect a discharge at the incision or a fever, lethargy. It is more likely that this is a scrotal hematoma. These typically do resolve in their own, but it can take weeks. Keep his activity level as low as possible to discourage more swelling, continue the anti inflammatory medication, make sure he cannot bite or lick it by using a “cone” if needed. It can provide some relief if he will allow you to do a cold compress on the area. Try wrapping an ice pack with cloth and apply to the area for 15 minutes..three times daily. It’s possible that Gunner may have an inguinal hernia where there is a rift in the abdominal wall near the genitalia where intestines are able to protrude out. This can be a life threatening condition where the intestines may become strangulated/twisted and start to become necrotic. Other possibilities include scrotal hematomas (the empty scrotum filling up with blood) and abscesses (pockets of infection). As he is painful, the safest option would be to take him to an emergency veterinary hospital. If it is a hernia, emergency surgery would likely be indicated. Good luck!

Swelling in this area can be caused by inflammation, decreased lymphatic fluid flow, fluid building up in the belly, among a few other things. Since this sounds like it started very quickly, I would recommend that Rascal get checked out by a vet today to see what can be causing the swelling. It is unlikely that it is related to him being previously neutered.

I recommend taking him to your veterinarian for a quick peek. They will gently clean the incision site to ensure that it is healing normally and the tissue is healthy underneath the scab.
