My dog has neck pain, cries, and won't crate rest. What can I do?

Poor Kawaii! Some dogs do unfortunately become stressed in the crate and struggle to get out, which can make things worse. I would recommend asking your veterinarian about getting a tranquilizer for him that you can use as needed, to help keep him calm for the next few weeks until he has recovered. This will help to keep him calm in the crate so that his back can heal.

Sounds like he may have neck pain. You need to crate rest him for 2-3 weeks meaning strict cage confinement and short leash walks only. Do not use a neck collar. Purchase a harness to go around his body. Also, do not allow him to run, jump or rough with other dogs during this period of rest. Hope he feels better soon!

I recommend that you have Sprinkles evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Sprinkles feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. An immediate check up is required as these signs seems to be compatible with a neurological problem. Intervertebral disc extrusion/protrusion in the cervical area can cause commonly nerve/spinal cord and meninges (around spinal cord) compression. The compression may be dynamic, showing up signs when moving the neck in certain postures. X rays and more specific and advanced imaging procedures may be needed. Poor puppy!! It sounds like your dog is on all the correct medications. I would try to find a canine acupuncturist as it can help greatly in cases of wind up pain such as you are describing. Intractable pain is also a reason for surgical decompression of the spinal cord as well. Otherwise keep doing what you are doing. If your dog will allow you to hot pack his neck that can be helpful as well.

I'm so sorry that we are just now getting to your question. We are a little behind on answering questions. I agree with the symptoms you are describing that Scruffy's neck may be bothering him. We can see bulging discs that can cause pain anywhere along the back and neck. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Scruffy to determine if his neck is painful and determine the best treatment for him. In the meantime, I would recommend keeping Scruffy quiet and not allow any running or jumping which might make his pain worse. If at any point Scruffy is unable to walk normally, it is a medical emergency and he needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away. Good luck!
