My dog has neck and body pain, struggling to walk. What's wrong?

Hello, My dog is in a lot of neck and body pain. He is struggling to walk or turn his neck. I think he has overdone it with exercise today running after the ball. What do you advise?

I would recommend having Dougal examined by a vet ASAP. These symptoms could be caused by muscle strain, or could be associated with a slipped disc or other serious musculoskeletal issue. The vet will do an exam and may need x-rays to look at the neck and spine. They can prescribe pain medications or other mediations based on what they think is going on.

It definitely sounds like he may have a strained muscle or a bulging disc in his neck area. I would have your vet look at him to help localize the pain, make sure he isn't having any neurological symptoms, possibly take X-rays, and prescribe him the appropriate medicine or treatment to help him feel better. I would not give him any human over the counter pain meds as most of these are toxic to dogs. I would try to get him seen asap but until then I would elevate his food bowl and confine him to a crate except to go outside to go potty. If he is showing obviously neurological signs (walking like he is drunk or dragging any limbs) then this is a true emergency and should be taking to your vet or local emergency clinic now if possible. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better soon.

Yes, it does sound like he hurt his neck. It would be best to get him to your vet for confirmation. It could be just a sprain/strain but it could also be more serious like an inflamed disk or herniation. Diagnostics (like xrays) may be needed. Based on the exam and any diagnostics the vet will be able to give you anti-inflammatory, pain medications and muscle relaxers that will help him. In the meantime, just try to keep him calm and quiet so he doesn't move his neck too much.

It is hard to say for certain what is going on without seeing Corazon in person for an exam. From what you described, it sounds like he may have some back or neck pain. I recommend he sees his veterinarian for an exam very soon to help pinpoint where the pain in coming from. Your vet may recommend x-rays or other imaging to help get a better idea of what the cause is so he can get the treatment he needs to start feeling better.

It sounds like a neck pain, which could be a sign of muscle sprain, intervertebral disc disease or even meningitis (probably less likely in Rocko's case). Please, take your dog to your local vet to get him fully examined. Your vet may recommend neck x-ray to look for changes in his spine and a blood test to look for signs of inflammation.

My dog is walking with his head down. Is he in pain or injured?

It could be due to a sprained muscle, a pinched nerve, or something more serious involving the vertebrae in the neck. Most of the time these situations do not resolve on their own, and I find that my patients need pain medications and potentially muscle relaxers, as well as strict cage rest for at least 2 weeks. In addition, you'll want your vet to do a thorough exam to rule out [Intervertebral Disc Disease](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/intervertebral-disc-disease/) (IVDD) that can occur if there is pressure being put on the spinal cord by a disk. Until you can get an appointment with your vet today or tomorrow, I would get [a harness](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/category/dog/dog-collars-leashes-and-harnesses/dog-harnesses) instead of a collar so as not to put any additional pressure on the area.

My dog whimpers, won't eat, and has neck pain. What should I do?

He may have some spinal cord problems, especially with the cervical spinal cord, such as a slipped disk or arthritic changes that press on nerves and are painful. Ob is apparently very much in pain and therefore should be seen by a veterinarian tonight. The vet will do a thorough physical exam, palpate the spine to find where the pain is coming from, and also do a neurological exam and then x-rays. He will then discuss the exam findings with you and possible treatment. Your dog will get pain medicine and other medications as necessary. Dogs with pain often do not eat, and eating also may be painful as he has to chew, open his mouth and move the jaws. This may be more painful than lapping up water.

I would be very concerned about this level of pain and would recommend an exam by a veterinarian. It could be neurological, a disc problem, a strain in the bones or muscles of the neck or possibly an infection somewhere in that area. The vet may recommend x-rays to get a diagnosis. Please do not give any human pain medication as these can cause serious side effects in animals. It is best to get pain medication that has been prescribed by your veterinarian that is safe for dogs. My dog screamed in pain, is drooling. What's wrong with his neck?

Poor Baby! It sounds like he may be suffering from some neck pain. This could progress causing neurological problems if left untreated. I would have your vet take a look at him to localize the pain and to ensure nothing else is going on. Your vet will be able to do x-rays if needed. In the meantime, I would keep him confined and do not let him jump, run or play until you can get in to see your vet. I would not give him any human pain meds as most are toxic to dogs.
