My dog has a nail infection. Does Petplan cover vet visits & meds?

This presentation could be due to a trauma (foreign body lesion/abscess) or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. This is not an emergency but needs to be seen as soon as your vet is open during normal hours. This may be a resistant infection or the area may keep getting reinfected because it is in a highly mobile spot where contamination is very easy (the foot). I would recommend taking your dog back to the vet for a recheck and having her sedated for the examination. This way the doctor will be able to closely examine the toe and the nail. The doctor will then be able to clip the nails back far enough to hopefully remove the problem. There is also a specific disease of the toenails that may need long-term treatment from specific medications. This is an auto-immune disease, lipoid onchodystrophy, and has a very specific presentation. Your vet should be able to determine if your dog has this condition with a thorough exam. He could have allergies and/or a nail infection. He should be examined by a vet to diagnose and treat the problem. Your vet can prescribe an antibiotic, anti-histamine, and/or a corticosteroid to treat. You could also soak his paws in a warm Epsom salt solution and see if that helps.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Tucker. I typically put dogs with broken or lost toe nails on oral antibiotics. The paw is inherently dirty. Licking it will increase the risk of an infection in the nail bed. If the nail bed becomes infected it is very painful for the dog and can be difficult to treat. For this reason, I do recommend that he still sees his veterinarian. At minimum, you need to place an E-collar on him to prevent any further licking. I hope this information helps!

Looks like he has an inflammatory process or infection of the nail bed and surrounding skin. These problems are often painful and usually cause a lot of licking and chewing which can definitely make the problem worse. I would advise taking Remy to your vet to have this evaluated or you could try some warm Epsom Salt soaks of the toe for 10 minutes two to three times daily. Put warm water and Epsom Salts in a basin and just have him stand in the basin while keeping him occupied with petting, treats, etc. If the area improves then you should be fine. If the irritation/infection gets worse then please see your vet for the appropriate treatment. Good luck with Remy.

Hello. These are commonly a chronic infection that has both bacteria and yeast involved. It is often necessary to treat with an oral antifungal plus a form of antibiotic (either topical or oral). These types of infections can take many weeks of treatment (6-10) to clear completely. A recheck with a veterinarian is needed in order to discuss the appropriate medications necessary to effectively treat this, but be prepared for a longer course of treatment than just the typical 10-14 days.
