My dog has mucousy stools. Should I give her a monthly dewormer?

It is possible that Sophie has a dietary indiscretion to the current diet or treats you are feeding her. I would recommend trying a different meat protein and see if this helps or try a sensitive stomach formula to see if this helps as well. Sometimes switching to a completely different brand helps as well. If the problem persists, I would recommend having a veterinarian test her stool for fecal parasites just to be on the safe side. That is a good question. Usually once yearly during Jenny's physical exam a fecal is done. They will look under the microscope to see if there are worm eggs or other parasites. Also I recommend checking for parasites should she have diarrhea and blood and or mucus in the stool. If they find parasite eggs they will prescribe the correct medication. I generally do not deworm without knowing if they have intestinal parasites and which ones as there are several different deworm medications that are used for different types of parasites. Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. There is always some mucus in stool. It aids in defecation. An increased amount can be due to some inflammation in the intestine. If she had intestinal parasites and was recently treated, this could be the cause. If she is behaving normally, you can monitor her at home. Consider a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal then transition slowly to her regular diet. Symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian include lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain.

We can not prescribe medications on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach as the laws require a vet to examine an animal in order to do so. I am glad that Coco is eating, I would start him on a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. This bland diet helps bind up the stool and usually helps the diarrhea. You can also start a dog probiotic, I like Purina Fortiflora. I would also deworm him with pyrantal pamoate or panacur. If the diarrhea started after starting the neopeptine and/or the liv52 I would stop them. I personally do not use human supplements in pets and urge caution in doing so. If the bland diet and probiotic doesn't help Coco needs to be examined by a Vet near you. I hope this helps and I wish Coco the very best!

There will be more! Give Toby a deworming treatment like Panacur or Drontal. He will need one every two weeks until he is 12 weeks old. Then one every month until he is six months of age, and after that he should be dewormed once every three months.
