My dog has a soft, movable chest lump. Should I get a second opinion?

What you are describing is most likely a 'lipoma' which is a fatty mass that usually causes no problems. 2 years old however is very young for this to happen, so I would recommend getting it checked out. Other possible causes: infection (abscess), lymph node, sialocele, tumors that are cancerous (mast cell tumors), tumors that are not cancerous (histocytoma), foreign object stuck inside, but bite with inflamed tissue, etc. I recommend having it checked by your vet, they will likely take a sample with a needle to see if they can determine what it is, and might have to take a biopsy based on the initial exam and 'FNA' (fine needle aspirate) findings. If the bump is under the skin, smooth and you can feel almost all of the way around it you are probably feeling a lipoma or fatty mass. If the bump is hard, irregular, firmly attached to the underlying area, getting bigger, or is painful to the touch then I'm more concerned about it being a tumor and I would bring Sammy in for an exam. Most masses you feel in the skin are benign and as long as you are keeping a close watch on it you should be fine to monitor it at home. It also could be from aninjury or insect bite and it may go away on its on in a week or so. If you are still concerned please take Sammy in for an exam. They can feel the bump and remove cells with a needle and look at them under the microscope. That way they can tell if it's fat, infection, inflammation or a tumor, and they can they recommend the appropriate treatment. Hello, sorry to hear about Izzy. That appears like small lump, which I suspect based not the brief history youve offered that it could just be a fatty tumor. These are typically benign and do not cause any discomfort to your pet. However, the best way to determine this is by having a physical exam and likely sampling the tumor to make sure there are no cancer cells that make up this mass.
