Why does my dog have missing fur patches with black dots on her chest?

My dog has some missing fur patches on her chest with little black dots on it. I have a photo on her profile gallery. She doesn't seem to care or even know but I just want to make sure.

It looks like she could have a mild skin infection. You could bathe her with a medicated shampoo, like Epi-soothe and see if that helps. If not, have your vet take a look at her to determine the cause and treat. Your vet can do a skin scrape, cytology, and/or culture to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to treat. She may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, corticosteroid, and/or other medications depending on the cause.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. From the pictures, it looks as though Dotty could have a skin infection. There are other skin conditions that can also present like this so it is probably best if you have a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. She may need a course of an oral antibiotic or antifungal alongside topical therapy with medicated shampoos and sprays. If you are unable to get to your veterinarian right away, you can start by using the below products that I recommend to most of my skin infection cases. These can be found online quite easily. 1. Douxo PS Chlorhexidine Combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolved

My dog has discolored, scabby chest skin. What can I do before vet?

That looks more like a mass from the photograph. Palpate the area and you may be able to determine if there is a lump under the dry skin. If it is a mass, have your pup seen. If it is more dry skin, this could be due to many reasons including ringworm (which humans can get), or bacterial infection. You can try washing the area once a day with antibacterial soap and rinsing it well. If it does not start to improve within a few days have your pups seen by the veterinarian. Why does my dog have a crusty skin spot on his chest with curly hair?

Poor girl. She has a skin infection caused by some sort of trauma to her skin. You can try shaving around the area and then cleaning it with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water followed by a topical hot spot spray from your local pet store. If after a few days things haven’t improved, then it’s best to get Jake seen by your vet for stronger pet formulated antibiotics to get this to heal. Best wishes with Jake and his hot spot. My dog has a cluster of blackhead-like bumps on her chest. What is it?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This looks like a focal infection. This can also be a change in pigmentation without any other effects. You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

It looks like he has a bacterial skin infection which could be associated with allergies. Have your vet take a look at him as he will need an oral antibiotic, anti-histamine, and/or a corticosteroid to help treat. You can also bathe him with a medicated dog shampoo.

Why does my dog have bumpy, crusted skin on her chest?

There are many underlying diseases that can predispose dogs to these conditions such as hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, food allergies, and immunosuppression. It is important to have Marley examined by a veterinarian who can perform tests to diagnose the condition and rule out any underlying disease. In the meantime, try to keep the area clean and dry and prevent her from licking or scratching it. I hope this helps!

Why does my dog's chest skin issue keep returning after antibiotics?

This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be fleas or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat her with a high quality flea treatment (e.g. advantage), then get her to the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy. Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics). simultaneously you should start her on a prescription hypoallergenic diet for at least 2 months. Hopefully you will see some results after all this, if not you and your vet should consider putting her on a long term allergy treatment (Atopica or Apoquel).
