My Shih Tzu missed antibiotic. Is bladder stone surgery still okay?

If Monkey has had bladder infections and is on a diet to dissolve the stone, then your vet most likely suspects that the stone is a type of stone called a struvite stone. I am attaching a handout on struvite stones below. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=460 Whenever we are trying to dissolve struvite stones with diet, we need to keep a dog on antibiotics for the entire time we are dissolving the stone. I am including a quote from the handout below. "The therapeutic diet must be the only food fed until the stone is dissolved. Antibiotics are needed as long as stones are in the bladder (bacteria are encrusted within the stone and as the stone dissolves, they are released). Every 4 to 6 weeks, new radiographs are taken to evaluate the stone size. If it is at least 20 percent smaller, the process is continued. A urinalysis is also checked to be sure the proper urinary conditions for dissolution are being created by the diet." So, I would recommend discussing this with your veterinarian, but if Monkey has been on the diet since September, it may be time to take x-rays again to make sure that the diet is working and you will need to keep Monkey on antibiotics as long as you are trying to dissolve the stone. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Antibiotics will not make the vaccine not effective. The reason to not vaccinate when they are sick is that the immune system is already ramped up when you are sick, so as to not make it worse. This is more of a concern when there is systemic inflammation (whole body response) to the infection vs. an isolated infection in the bladder. A thickened wall of the bladder could very well be from chronic urinary tract infections, however the question would be WHY is she having chronic urinary tract infections. Also, before switching antibiotics (which is OK to try) it is a good idea to get a culture done of the urine to determine which antibiotic is best to use. If this course of antibiotics doesn't work, or if Gracie gets another urinary tract infection within the next year or so, then I would suggest making sure you get a culture of the urine before starting antibiotics (ideal but often not done due to cost of this test), and also I would be looking at her vulva area to determine if there is a physical cause to her getting chronic urinary tract infections. This can happen when animals are obese, or if there is a lot of extra skin or flaps around the vulva and infection is present around the vulvar skin. Sometimes doing surgery of the skin around the vulva can help prevent more urinary tract infections. Best of luck with Gracie!

Hello. It is unfortunately impossible for us to recommend using human medication without knowing there is a real problem with your pet. At best, you may be giving an unnecessary medication & at worse, you may be treating inappropriately & causing a simple infection to become much worse. There are no specific contraindications linked with these operations, even though some adhesions between the uterus and the bladder may be seen. Keep her monitored for any urinary tract signs during pregnancy, but otherwise not much else needs to be done at this stage.

First, I would make sure that this gets reported either by you or your veterinarian if you bought it through your vet. Adverse reactions like this need to be reported and often times the manufacturer will reimburse for any medical bills accrued due to the reaction. So get this reported as soon as possible. Secondly, with everything that is going on, you should contact your vet who treated Oliver and get their opinion on giving the antibiotic. They know all of the details and they can assess Oliver again if needed and make a better judgement call. Good luck with Oliver.

Medication choice depends on what type of infection they found and if culture/sensitively was performed. Be sure to feed her before medication. In some cases smaller can be given more frequently, or different antibiotic or possibly a long lasting injection may be given if she can not tolerate oral medications Good luck I hope she’s better soon.
