Why is my old Min Pin losing fur on her forehead? Is it normal?

Minor skin and coat changes can be normal in older dogs, however it is always best to rule out anything underlying such as a metabolic issues, especially if you are seeing any other changes such as weight gain/loss, irritation of the skin, increases in thirst/urination, or changes in eating habits as these can all indicate a metabolic rather than an aging problem. If he checks out healthy, it may just be that he got the genetics for having a thinner coat, whereas some dogs may go gray faster or not at all, etc. Keeping the area groomed and free of mats may help keep any remaining hair from being pulled out, and in some cases a supplement such as fish oil or vitamin E may help with overall skin and coat health.

If she is not bothering at the area by scratching it, then you may continue to monitor her. As long as the skin is not red, thickened and there are no raised bumps, this is likely normal. If the hair thinning / hair loss continues / worsens, then I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at Apples so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. That could be completely normal, unless there are any lesions on her skin that you can notice and describe to us. A picture as well would be of great help to understand the underlying nature of it. Hair thinning can happen sometimes with age, however if you are seeing any other symptoms such as sores appearing, redness, pawing at the areas, or metabolic symptoms such as increased drinking or urination, weight changes, etc, it could indicate the thinning is part of something else such as an allergy, parasite, or metabolic illness. I would continue to monitor the area and keep them clean and dry, and if you notice any of the above symptoms schedule a vet visit to rule out any issues.

Hairloss can be from allergies, parasites, endocrine disorders or breed related alopecia. Depending on what the veterinarian finds during Toby's exam they may recommend diagnostic testing to look for a primary skin disorder or bloodwork to check for endocrine (such as thyroid or adrenal gland) abnormalities. Poor guy. This appears to be a localized area of alopecia and exoriations, whicih can be caused by a number of things including: Demodexx mites (usually not itchy), hypothyroidism, or a bacterial infection on the skin just to naame a few. I would recommend starting with a skin scrape/cytology test through your vet to check for Mites. If that is negative, then a skin culture can be done to check for bacteria. A thyroid test can also be done to rule in/out thyroid disease. All of these things are treatable with medications, once the cause has been determinedd.
